CARSON, Calif.- The Cal State Dominguez Hills
softball team split a non-conference doubleheader today with the
visiting Eagles of Concordia University. CSUDH took the first game
10-8, but dropped the second 2-4. The Toros move to 9-4-1 on the
season, while the NAIA Eagles improve to 4-5.
In game one, the Toros got ten runs off of
eight hits. CU struck first with a run in the opening inning, but
CSUDH would answer right back getting four runs off of two hits.
As if a four run inning was not good enough, the Toros would add
five in the bottom of the fourth. Cindy Gates started things off
with a single to third base, as errors by the Eagles and a wild
pitch would score Lori Moreno, Cindy Gates, Ally Webber and
Natalie Sharp. Senior catcher Daisy Flores had an RBI single up
the middle to score Renee Snyder and put the Toros on top 10-2.
CU would put together an impressive fifth
inning, but hurler Janet Briscoe would replace Val Long to close
out the game 10-8 in favor of CSUDH.
Long went 4.1 innings in the win, improving her
ledger to 5-1 . Briscoe came in for the save in 2 innings with
four strikeouts.
Errors led to the Toros demise in game two.
CSUDH was holding onto a 2-0 lead going into the top of the
seventh. Two errors leading to four unanswered runs was all it
took for the Toros to fall.
The Eagles had four of their eight hits in the
seventh inning alone. With two outs and bases loaded, a throwing
error by CSUDH would score the first run. A single after that
would tie the game up at two apiece with the go ahead run on
third. Another hit, followed by an error would put the Eagles
ahead 4-2.
CSUDH was unable to answer in the bottom of the
seventh.
