PHOENIX, Ariz.Cal State Dominguez Hills
won two of three games over nationally ranked #10 Grand Canyon on
Saturday at Brazell Stadium. The two teams began the day resuming
a game after a rain suspension from the night before. Grand Canyon
recorded the 7-0 victory, their lone win of the four game series.
Dominguez Hills then went on to sweep the regularly scheduled
double-header later in the afternoon, 9-4, and then 4-3 in the
night cap.
In the continuation of the game from the night
before the Antelopes 11 hits were no match for the visiting Toros
mere two for the seven inning contest. Antelope senior righty
Devin Perrin (Glendale, AZ/Apollo HS) posted the win after four
innings pitched allowing no runs on two hits while striking out
six batters. GCU reliever, sophomore right-hander Jeff Swanson
(Phoenix, AZ/Phoenix Christian HS) combined with Perrin for the
shutout as he picked up his third save of the season pitching
three innings and allowing no runs on no hits, while striking out
two.
Leading the Lopes at the plate was senior
catcher Joey Reiman (Phoenix, AZ/Apollo HS) as he went 3-for-3,
while sophomore shortstop Ryan Bethel (Willcox, AZ/Willcox HS) was
also impressive as he was 2-for-3 in the 7-0 victory.
Dominguez Hills had three multiple run innings
that contributed to their 9-4 win in game one of the double
header. Despite GCU out hitting the Toros 14 to 10, the Lopes
left 10 runners stranded compared to CSUDHs 8.
Toro senior right-hander Rick Moore (Hesperia,
CA) picked up the win after seven innings pitched allowing two
runs on two hits.
Junior shortstop Eric Pringle (Inglewood, CA)
and senior outfielder Joe Gevas (Vallejo, CA) combined for four of
the CSUDH 10 hits, to include a homerun by Gevas.
Grand Canyons sophomore righty, Bethel
recorded his third loss of the season after pitching six innings
and allowing six earned runs on nine hits, while striking out five
and walking two batters.
Canyons Reiman was 3-for-5 to include two
doubles, while senior designated hitter Chris Raymond (Phoenix,
AZ/St. Marys HS), senior outfielder Chris Rock (Glendale,
AZ/Ironwood HS), junior catcher Brian Trink (Scottsdale,
AZ/Horizon HS) and senior outfielder Jake Wright (Glendale,
AZ/Northwest Community Christian HS) each tallied two hits in the
loss.
In the second game of the double-header CSUDH
was leading 3-0 in the top of the fifth when the game was delayed
for a half hour due to rain. Once play was resumed Grand Canyon
tried for a late comeback recording runs in the bottom of the
sixth (2) and seventh (1), but to no avail as Dominguez Hills
capped off the night adding an insurance run in the top of the
seventh for the 4-3 victory.
Combining for six of the Toros nine hits for
the night, with two each were Gevas, senior second baseman Davie
Keesee (Saugus, CA) and senior first baseman Tony Marquez
(Roseville, CA).
CSUDHs junior righty Larry Robles (San
Pedro, CA) improved to 2-0 on the season after pitching six
innings allowing one earned run on seven hits while striking out
eight. Toro senior right-hander Chris Ingstad (Lakewood, CA)
recorded the save after pitching one inning and allowing no runs
on one hit and striking out one batter.
Grand Canyons first-year lefty Steve Lux
(Longmont, CO/Niwot HS) recorded his first loss of the season
after pitching five innings and allowing two earned runs on six
hits while striking out two and walking four.
GCUs senior first baseman Adam Blong
(Littleton, CO/Chatfield HS) was team leader at the plate as he
was 2-for-4 in the loss.
With the wins Cal State Dominguez Hills
improves to 10-8 on the year, and 6-6 in the California Collegiate
Athletic Association (CCAA), while Grand Canyon drops to 13-7
overall and 6-6 in the CCAA.
Cal State Dominguez Hills will continue action
on Thursday, March 6, when they travel to Cal Poly Pomona for a
single game set to begin at 2:30 p.m. Pacific Time. The Grand
Canyon baseball team will resume play next weekend when they host
UC San Diego for a four-game series to begin on Friday, March 7,
with first pitch set for 7:00 p.m. Mountain Time at Brazell
Stadium.
