PHOENIX, Ariz.—Cal State Dominguez Hills won two of three games over nationally ranked #10 Grand Canyon on Saturday at Brazell Stadium. The two teams began the day resuming a game after a rain suspension from the night before. Grand Canyon recorded the 7-0 victory, their lone win of the four game series. Dominguez Hills then went on to sweep the regularly scheduled double-header later in the afternoon, 9-4, and then 4-3 in the night cap.

In the continuation of the game from the night before the Antelopes 11 hits were no match for the visiting Toros mere two for the seven inning contest. Antelope senior righty Devin Perrin (Glendale, AZ/Apollo HS) posted the win after four innings pitched allowing no runs on two hits while striking out six batters. GCU reliever, sophomore right-hander Jeff Swanson (Phoenix, AZ/Phoenix Christian HS) combined with Perrin for the shutout as he picked up his third save of the season pitching three innings and allowing no runs on no hits, while striking out two.

Leading the ‘Lopes at the plate was senior catcher Joey Reiman (Phoenix, AZ/Apollo HS) as he went 3-for-3, while sophomore shortstop Ryan Bethel (Willcox, AZ/Willcox HS) was also impressive as he was 2-for-3 in the 7-0 victory.

Dominguez Hills had three multiple run innings that contributed to their 9-4 win in game one of the double header. Despite GCU out hitting the Toros 14 to 10, the ‘Lopes left 10 runners stranded compared to CSUDH’s 8.

Toro senior right-hander Rick Moore (Hesperia, CA) picked up the win after seven innings pitched allowing two runs on two hits.

Junior shortstop Eric Pringle (Inglewood, CA) and senior outfielder Joe Gevas (Vallejo, CA) combined for four of the CSUDH 10 hits, to include a homerun by Gevas.

Grand Canyon’s sophomore righty, Bethel recorded his third loss of the season after pitching six innings and allowing six earned runs on nine hits, while striking out five and walking two batters.

Canyon’s Reiman was 3-for-5 to include two doubles, while senior designated hitter Chris Raymond (Phoenix, AZ/St. Mary’s HS), senior outfielder Chris Rock (Glendale, AZ/Ironwood HS), junior catcher Brian Trink (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon HS) and senior outfielder Jake Wright (Glendale, AZ/Northwest Community Christian HS) each tallied two hits in the loss.

In the second game of the double-header CSUDH was leading 3-0 in the top of the fifth when the game was delayed for a half hour due to rain. Once play was resumed Grand Canyon tried for a late comeback recording runs in the bottom of the sixth (2) and seventh (1), but to no avail as Dominguez Hills capped off the night adding an insurance run in the top of the seventh for the 4-3 victory.

Combining for six of the Toros nine hits for the night, with two each were Gevas, senior second baseman Davie Keesee (Saugus, CA) and senior first baseman Tony Marquez (Roseville, CA).

CSUDH’s junior righty Larry Robles (San Pedro, CA) improved to 2-0 on the season after pitching six innings allowing one earned run on seven hits while striking out eight. Toro senior right-hander Chris Ingstad (Lakewood, CA) recorded the save after pitching one inning and allowing no runs on one hit and striking out one batter.

Grand Canyon’s first-year lefty Steve Lux (Longmont, CO/Niwot HS) recorded his first loss of the season after pitching five innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits while striking out two and walking four.
