SCOUTING THE COYOTES The Coyotes
are off to a slow start on the season with a 7-17 overall
record and a 5-7 CCAA ledger. They went 2-2 in play last week,
with two losses to CCAA power UC Davis, followed by a two game
sweep of Chico State. Tracie Schioppi is leading the team at
the plate with 26 hits in 75 at bats. She also has two
homeruns. In fact, the Coyotes as a team have seven homeruns,
compared to just the two hit by the Toros. Hurler Dawn Onishi
is leading the CSUSB pitching staff. She is 2-5 on the season
so far with a 3.74 ERA. This is the 66th meeting between the
two teams with the Toros holding a 41-24 lead. The teams met
five times last season with the Toros winning four of those.
The last meeting was on April 19, 2002, when the Toros posted
a 2-1 win over the Coyotes. |

SCOUTING THE TRITONS UC San Diego
is coming into this week's play off of three straight losses.
They split the Chico State series and were swept by the Aggies
the following day. They are now 10-9 overall and an even 6-6
in conference play. The Tritons have three batters, Danielle
Ross, Amy Mettee and Kim Aggabao posting impressive batting
averages on the season, with Ross leading the way hitting at a
.455 clip. Aggabao has a team-leading 21 hits on the season
with an impressive 20 RBI. Pitcher Jodie Bland is 5-3 on the
season with a 2.14 ERA. She has allowed only 26 runs in over
65 innings pitched. Last season, the squads faced off six
times, with the 2003 series split at three wins apiece. Their
last meeting as a 1-0 win by UC San Diego in the Mountain Dew

TOROS TO HOST COYOTES AND EAGLES THIS WEEK
IN CCAA ACTION
The Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team will be in CCAA
action this week as they host the visiting Coyotes of Cal State
San Bernardino on Friday with first pitch at 1:00 p.m., followed
by the Tritons of UC San Diego on Saturday. Things start off in
that game at noon. The Toros will look to continue to ride the
tide of CCAA success. They swept the Warriors of Cal State
Stanislaus last Saturday.
HEAD COACH JIM MAIER
In just two seasons at the helm of the Toros softball program,
head coach Jim Maier has become one of the most successful coaches
in recent CSUDH history. Maier led the 2001 Toros to a 36-27
record, which tied a CSUDH record for most wins in a season. In
2002, CSUDH finished 32-22 overall and 20-12 in conference play
which was good enough for a second place tie in the tough
California Collegiate Athletic Association. In addition, Maier has
led ten players to all-conference recognition, and in 2002 Maier
helped to guide one standout to all-West Region honors. Maier
picked up his first win as a collegiate coach when the Toros
defeated Cal State Bakersfield 3-1 in the 2001 season opener.
SHARP IS LEADING TOROS AT THE PLATE
Junior shortstop Natalie Sharp has been a nice addition to the
Toros softball program. Sharp, a transfer from Cypress JC, is
leading the Toros in hits so far this season. Sharp has 18 hits in
51 at bats for a .353 batting average, the third best on the
squad. Sharp has three doubles and she got her second homerun in
the Toros win this past weekend. In fact, her grand slam homerun
over right center was the first CSUDH homerun hit on the new Toro
Diamond. She is also leading the team in RBI with 15and total
bases with 27. Defensively, she is also one of the most effective
players with 22 putouts and 51 assists.
SEVEN TOROS POSTING DOUBLE-FIGURE HITS
Coach Maier should be happy with the way some of his players are
swinging the bat . Seven of his players are posting double-figure
hits in the young 2003 season. In addition to Sharp who is leading
the team with 18 hits, third baseman Cindy Gates and outfielder
Ally Webber are tallying 14 hits apiece, freshman first baseman
Natalie Greco has posted 12 hits, while Dani Proctor and Renee
Snyder are tallying 11. Hurler Kim O'Hanian is rounding out the
seven Toros hitting in double-figures with ten.
WEBBER IS A WELCOME ADDITION TO THIS YEARS
SQUAD
Sophomore Ally Webber is making a place for herself on this years
squad. Webber, a transfer from Humboldt State, has the second most
hits on the team at 14, and is hitting at a .333 clip this season.
Currently, she has a four-game hitting streak going. Her longest
hitting streak was seven, from February 7 to February 21. She is
also strong in the field for the Toros. In 16 games, she has 14
putouts with one assist, mostly playing in right filed, but also
seeing time in center.
JUST TRY AND GET A RUN OFF OF THE TOROS
PITCHING STAFF
Go ahead! Just try to get a run off of Toro hurlers, Val Long and
Kim O'Hanian. So far, the two have allowed only 23 runs on the
season. Combined they are 10-3,and are keeping batters to a
batting average below .219. Not bad work for a sophomore and a
freshman. Long is the top returning pitcher from last season. She
is recording a 1.92 ERA, allowing 11 runs and 31 hits in 142 at
bats. O'Hanian has thrown 57.1 innings, including seven complete
games. She has faced 200 batters, giving up ten runs and 37 hits.
She is recording a staff low 0.61 ERA.
TOROS ARE A TEAM OF THIEVES
The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros like to steal...bases that is.
CSUDH has snatched 36 bags so far this season in 48 attempts. If
the Toros continue at this pace, a little over two steals per
game, they should look to shatter last year's total of 57. Cindy
Gates is leading the charge with seven stolen bases in eight
attempts.
FOURTH INNING RALLY
The Toros like the fourth inning. Of their 61 runs on the 2003
season, 14 of those have come in the fourth. CSUDH also likes to
jump out to a quick start as they have scored 10 runs in the first
inning. But the seventh inning is where opponents get their runs.
Of the 35 runs scored by opposing teams, nine of them have been
scored in the seventh.
TOROS LIKE IT AT HOME
Cal State Dominguez Hills has taken a liking to their its Toro
Diamond. The Toros are 8-2 at home, with their only losses coming
to Sonoma State and Concordia University. On the road, they are
3-2-1.
