CARSON, Calif.--The Toro softball team pounded
out 21 hits on the day to sweep the visiting Coyotes of Cal State
San Bernardino, 8-1 and 8-0, in CCAA action Friday at Toro
Diamond.
With the twinbill sweep, CSUDH elevates to
13-4-1 and 9-3 in conference action while CS San Bernardino falls
to 7-19 and 5-10 in CCAA play.
CSUSB jumped out to an early 1-0 in game one in
the first inning on a Sharmaine Kendrick RBI double. But the Toros
answered with two runs in the third on an RBI groundout by
Danielle Proctor (Crescenta Valley HS) and an infield single by
Natalie Sharp (California HS) to take the lead for good, 2-1.
CSUDH plated single runs in the fourth and
fifth, followed by a four-run outburst in the sixth to go on for
the first game win. The sixth inning was highlighted by 2-run
singles from Ally Webber (Crescenta Valley HS) and Proctor. Webber
finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI and Proctor knocked in four
runs on two hits. Senior catcher Daisy Flores (Bishop Amat HS) was
a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate.
Toro starter Val Long (6-1) pitched a
complete-game three-hitter while striking out five batters. Dawn
Onishi (2-6) suffered the loss for the Coyotes going the first
five innings allowing four runs.
In game two, the Toros used an 11-hit attack
while Nina Distefano (St. Joseph HS) and Kim O'Hanian (St. Paul
HS) combined on a two-hit shutout to capture the nightcap, 8-0.
Flores' RBI groundout in the bottom of the sixth ended the game
via mercy rule.
Freshman third baseman Cindy Gates (Silverado
HS) 2-run triple highlighted a four-run second inning.
The Toros added a single run in the fifth on a
run-scoring single by Courtney Woltz (Riverside Poly HS) to take a
5-0 lead. CSUDH then finished the sweep with three runs in the
sixth on an RBI single from Proctor, a wild pitch with the bases
loaded and a run-scoring groundout from Flores to end the game.
Distefano pitched a no-hitter the first three
innings before giving way to O'Hanian (6-2) who tossed the final
three shutout innings to earn the win.
Natalie Sharp, Renee Snyder (Mater Dei HS),
Courtney Woltz and Lori Moreno (California HS) all contributed
with two hits apiece.
Jamie Killeen (2-8) suffered the loss in the
circle for CSUSB pitching the first five innings allowing five
runs on eight hits.
Cal State Dominguez Hills is back in CCAA
action tomorrow hosting UC San Diego. The doubleheader is set to
start at noon.
