CARSON, Calif.- Cal State Dominguez Hills
extended its win streak to eight games with a softball
doubleheader sweep, 5-3 and 3-2, of UC San Diego today. The Toros,
who have won nine of their last ten games, improve to 15-4-1 on
the season, and 11-3 in conference play, while the loss drops the
Tritons to 11-12 overall and 7-8 in CCAA action.
In game one, UCSD started off things with a
bang when Amy Metee sent a lead-off solo shot over the left field
fence for the 1-0 lead. UCSD would strike again in the second,
when a Toro error would score the Triton run. But an error plagued
inning at the bottom of the second by UCSD would put the Toros on
top 3-2. The Toros plated runs in the third and fourth innings,
with Dani Proctor (Crescenta Valley HS) doing a nice job at the
plate, going 2 of 3 with an RBI in that span.
The Tritons would battle in the top of the
seventh as they got on base with a walk and an RBI single down the
right field line With runners on the corners and the tying run at
bat, freshman hurler Kim O'Hanian (St. Paul HS) came in for the
save. After a sacrifice fly to put the Tritons within striking
distance at 3-5, O'Hanian and the Toros defense did not let
anything by as the Toros walked off the field with the 5-3 win.
Sophomore pitcher Val Long (St. Mary's) HS,
picked up her seventh win of the season, while Jenny Spencer was
charged her first loss. Kim O'Hanian was awarded the save, her
second of the season.
In game two, CSUDH got off to a quick start
when senior catcher Daisy Flores (Bishop Amat HS) doubled to left
center. Flores was scored by Clarissa Parga who nailed one up the
gap to center. After a two hit inning, CSUDH found themselves on
top 1-0.
UCSD would take the lead off of a two hit, two
run inning in the top of four, but CSUDH put together a two run
inning when it was Flores once again who singled to center and
Parga that drove home pinch runner Taneisha Antoine, while an
error by the Tritons would allow Flores to score, putting the
Toros up 3-2.
The Tritons would threaten to score in the top
of the seventh, but once again O'Hanian came through in the circle
and closed out the inning by sending the batter down swinging.
O'Hanian got the win in the contest, as she
went the distance. She is now 7-2 on the season.
Keri Hanley was charged with the loss for
CSUDH, she is now 3-6. |
