THIS WEEK IN TOROS SOFTBALL

Complex/Bakersfield, CA
* CCAA games
TOROS TRAVEL TO BAKERSFIELD FOR LONE GAME
OF THE WEEK
CSUDH will look to keep their six game win streak alive this
weekend as they travel to Bakersfield to take on the Roadrunners
in a CCAA doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch in that contest is
slated for 12:00 p.m. The Toros were 4-0 in last week's action,
with conference sweeps of CS San Bernardino and UC San Diego.
HEAD COACH JIM MAIER
In just two seasons at the helm of the Toros softball program,
head coach Jim Maier has become one of the most successful coaches
in recent CSUDH history. Maier led the 2001 Toros to a 36-27
record, which tied a CSUDH record for most wins in a season. In
2002, CSUDH finished 32-22 overall and 20-12 in conference play
which was good enough for a second place tie in the tough
California Collegiate Athletic Association. In addition, Maier has
led ten players to all-conference recognition, and in 2002 Maier
helped to guide one standout to all-West Region honors. Maier
picked up his first win as a collegiate coach when the Toros
defeated Cal State Bakersfield 3-1 in the 2001 season opener.
TOROS KEEP THE WINS COMING
The Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team in enjoying a
six-game win streak, the longest of the season and the longest
since the 1995 season when the Toros won 11-straight. More
impressive is the fact that the six wins have been CCAA victories.
Currently, the Toros have the longest win streak going in the
conference. The Toros have won seven of their last eight games,
with their last loss coming on February 28 to the Eagles of
Concordia (CA) in a 2-4 non conference loss at Toro Diamond.
MAIER CAN'T GO WRONG IN THE LEAD OFF SPOT
Head coach Jim Maier can't go wrong when he chooses which
player to put into the leadoff spot. The Toros two main leadoff
hitters, Ally Webber and Natalie Sharp, have combined for 19
starts and 60 at bats. Webber has tallied 10 hits and four RBI
with a .385 batting average in that slot, while Sharp has posted
11 hits, three doubles and 11 RBI with a .324 average in the
leadoff position. Overall, the Toros are hitting .344 in the one
position.
TOROS LIKE IT AT HOME
Cal State Dominguez Hills has taken a liking to Toro Diamond.
The Toros are 12-2 at home, with their only losses coming to
Sonoma State and Concordia University. In fact, the Toros have won
six straight on their home field and have won seven of the last
eight games. On the road, they are 3-2-1. They will look to pick
up a couple more road wins when they travel to CS Bakersfield on
Saturday.
TOROS ARE A TEAM OF THIEVES
The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros like to steal...bases that
is. CSUDH has snatched 47 bags so far this season in 63 attempts.
If the Toros continue at this pace, a little over two steals per
game, they should look to shatter last year's total of 57. Cindy
Gates is leading the charge with eight stolen bases in nine
attempts.
WEBBER IS EMERGING AS A TOP PLAYER FOR THE
TOROS
Only a sophomore and only 20 games into the young 2003 season,
outfielder Ally Webber has already emerged as one to the top
players for the Toros. Webber has seen action in all 20 games,
either as a DP, or a center or rightfielder. She is posting a .352
batting average, the second highest on the squad, with 19 hits in
54 at bats. She has one double, five RBI, nine runs, and 20 total
bases. She is also patient at the plate with a team-high eight
base on balls. Most impressive though is her hitting streak.
Webber has connected in her last eight games, the longest current
streak and the longest streak of the season. Webber has also
posted multiple hits in two games so far this year.
SNYDER IS SHINING HER SENIOR SEASON
Senior Renee Snyder is getting it done this season, her final
season of collegiate softball, as he has become one of the top
offensive players this season. She is posting a .318 batting
average which is the fifth best on the squad. She has recorded 14
hits with five of those being two-baggers and one being a triple.
Snyder has brought in 21 runs and has scored four herself. She has
played in 19 of 20 games and has been at bat 44 times. She has
shown much improvement from last season, as her batting average
has gone up 128 points from a final .189 in 2002 to .318 as of
last week's play. She has also been impressive on defense as she
has 14 putouts and two assists in the outfield.
FOURTH INNING RALLY
The Toros like the fourth inning. Of their 85 runs on the 2003
season, 18 of those have come in the fourth. CSUDH also likes to
jump out to a quick start as they have scored 10 runs in the first
inning, and 17 runs in the second inning. But the seventh inning
is where opponents get their runs. Of the 41 runs scored by
opposing teams, ten of them have been scored in the seventh.
TOROS SHUTTING TEAMS OUT
The Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team are not letting
their opponents get runs. The Toros have rallied for six shutouts
on the season, but have not been shutout once. Even in their three
losses, the Toros have managed to post at least one run or more.
The Toros have never lost a game by more then two runs.
