PITCHING ROTATION:
Thursday vs. UCSD (R-Robles, 2-0),
Friday vs. UCSD (R-Moore, 3-2),
Saturday vs. UCSD (L-Owen, 0-1/R-Cortes, 2-1)
EXTRA PERFECT:
The Toros are perfect so far in extra-inning games in 2003.
CSUDH beat CS San Bernardino in 12 innings (8-7), Grand Canyon in
11 innings (5-3) and Cal Poly Pomona in eight innings (7-6).
GEVAS GOING GOOD:
Senior outfielder Joe Gevas (Vallejo, CA) is on fire in his final
year in a Toros uniform. Gevas leads the squad in batting average
(.354), hits (29), home runs (7), RBI (19), runs (20), and
slugging percentage (.707). In 21 games, Gevas leads the Toros
with 14 extra-base hits including six doubles and a triple.
MARQUEZ MAKING HIS MARK:
Senior infielder Tony Marquez (Roseville, CA) is picking up right
where he left off last year. A second-team All-CCAA player in
2002, Marquez is second on the squad with a .322 batting average
and five home runs. Marquez has knocked in 14 runs and has an
impressive .661 slugging percentage.
HEY ABBOTT:
Freshman left-handed pitcher Chris Abbott (Pasadena HS) earned
his first collegiate victory Saturday against Cal Poly Pomona.
Abbott (1-0) was the benefactor of David Keesee's walk-off homer
coming on in relief in the seventh inning. Abbott pitched the
final 1.1 shutout innings allowing only one hit. Abbott has tossed
3.1 innings on the year registering a 2.70 ERA.
COUNTING ON CORTES:
Senior RHP Brian Cortes (2-1), the all-time CSUDH career saves
leader with 28 coming into the season, is now the Toros top
starting pitcher. Cortes has started four games while registering
an impressive 1.49 ERA in 36.1 innings. Opposing hitters are
managing a meager .191 against him. Cortes is second on the staff
with 30 strikeouts and has given up only 26 hits.
SALAZAR SAVORING TIME:
Newcomer Ruben Salazar (St. John Bosco HS) is making the most of
his first year in a Toro uniform. The sophomore transfer from
Cerritos College is the only player to start and play in all 22
games, mostly at third base, and is hitting .318. Salazar is
second on the team in hits (27), RBI (18) and is tied for the team
lead with eight doubles.
GOING...GOING...GONE!:
Senior outfielder Joe Gevas (Vallejo, CA/St. Patrick HS) has
already hit seven home runs this year, just one shy of his
career-high of eight set in 2002. He is currently on pace to break
the all-time CSUDH mark for homers in a season (15) set by Ed
Packard in 1978. Gevas has smacked 21 career bombs in 3+ years in
a Toros uniform.
SENIOR HURLERS STRUGGLING:
Two of the senior mainstays on this year's staff have struggled
early on. RHP Aldo Silva (1-3), who won nine games last year, has
registered a 7.96 ERA in five starts. RHP Chris Ingstad (2-3) has
had a few rocky starts compiling a 7.78 ERA. Ingstad has been
effective out of the pen, but if the Toros are to be successful in
their bid for postseason play, both Silva and Ingstad will have to
eat up more solid innings on the mound. Stay tuned.
FAB FRESHMEN:
The Toros pitching staff consists of three freshmen that are
putting up good numbers in their first collegiate seasons. LHP
Fred Medina (Santa Ana, CA/Century HS) has not allowed a run in
three appearances. LHP Chris Abbott is 1-0 in three appearances
while compiling a 2.70 ERA. LHP Ryan Owen (West Torrance HS)
rounds out the trio of frosh southpaws that is making a
significant impact. Owen (0-1) has notched a 3.18 ERA in six
appearances, including one start, spanning 17.0 innings.
