TURLOCK The Warriors jumped out ahead
but the visiting Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills came back as
the Cal State Stanislaus baseball team dropped a 6-3 decision in
the opening game of the four-game series on Friday.
CSU Dominguez Hills starter Brian Cortes
pitched a complete game and gave up three runs on seven hits for
the win as the Toros improved to 14-13 overall, 9-11 in the
California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Kyle Dennis and Jeff Crabtree each had two hits
for the Warriors, but starter Scott Geissler gave up six runs on
13 hits in seven-plus innings to pick up the loss. The Warriors
are 10-17-1 overall and 6-10 in the CCAA.
Trailing 1-0 in the third, the Warriors put
three runs on the board on five hits. The inning was highlighted
by John Abdelkerims one-out single to right-center field
that scored two runs, to go ahead 3-1. Cortes, however, got the
Warriors to ground into a double play to end the inning.
Cortes cruised from that point on, facing just
two batters over the minimum in the final six innings. He retired
15 of the next 18 batters while his teammates added two runs in
the fifth to tie and scored three more in late innings to secure
the win.
Frank Perez was 3-for-4 while four Toros each
scattered two hits to lead the Toros offense.
The same two teams will play a doubleheader on
Saturday with the first game starting at noon at Warrior Baseball
Field.
