Cal State Dominguez Hills scored four times in
the seventh to overturn a 4-3 deficit and defeat 24th-ranked UC
San Diego, 7-4, in the conclusion of a California Collegiate
Athletic Association baseball game at UCSDs Triton Baseball
Field Tuesday, that was postponed back on March 15 due to rain.
The game was scheduled for seven innings as
part of a doubleheader. UCSD won the first game of the twinbill on
March 15, 13-9, in rainy conditions, before the nightcap was
suspended after one inning with CSUDH ahead by the score of 2-0.
Sophomore Ruben Salazar, who had connected on a
two-run home run to give his Toros the lead in the first inning 10
days ago, bookended the victory with another two-run shot to get
things going in the seventh. After junior Jason Flores led the
inning off with a single, Salazar snuck one over the wall down the
leftfield line as CSUDH regained the advantage before tacking on
two more scores in the frame.
All four runs came against Triton senior James
Sanders (Chula Vista/Hilltop HS), who dropped to 1-3 on the year
with the loss.
Aldo Silva (2-4) earned the win in relief of
fellow senior Brian Cortes, who had started for the Toros.
The visitors extended to a 3-0 lead following
the resumption, with a single run in the third. UCSD then struck
for four in the fourth to take the lead, with back-to-back
run-scoring doubles coming from Nigel Miller and Chris Brannan,
and senior centerfielder Matt Smith (La Mesa/Helix HS) capping the
rally with an RBI triple.
Salazar finished the game two-for-three with
four runs batted in and three runs scored. Zach Cort and Don
Bracken each added a pair of hits.
For UCSD, John Bologna, Jeff Riddle and Brett
Burton provided two hits apiece.
The loss snapped a seven-game win streak for
UCSD, dropping its record to 18-12 overall, 13-7 in the CCAA. The
Tritons sit in second place in the league standings, behind Sonoma
State.
The victory boosted the Toros record to
15-16 overall, 10-14 in conference play.
The Toros host Biola Wednesday.
