Cal State San Marcos Wins Coyote Golf Tournament

CALIMESA -- Rob Keller fired a three-under par 69 Tuesday to take individual honors and two of his teammates placed in the top six as Cal State San Marcos captured the team title at the 2nd annual Coyote Classic Invitational collegiate golf tournament at PGA of Southern California at Oak Valley.

Keller nailed down a tournament high 14 birdies as he posted rounds of 71, 70 and 69 to finish the 54-hole tournament with a six-under par total of 210, six shots ahead of the field. Teammates Joe Rathburn and Ryan Axlund tied for sixth with a three-day total of 221.

CSU San Marcos, ranked third in the nation among NAIA teams by Golfstat.com, produced a team score of 871, just seven over par for three rounds over the challenging 6,804-yard, par-72 Champions course. Four of the team's five members finished 18th or better in the 60-man field.

Cal State Dominguez as a team shot 953. The low individual was Jan Wong.

Cal State Bakersfield, ranked No. 3 in the nation among NCAA Div. II teams and the team leader after the first round, faded to third at 886, 17 shots behind San Marcos. The Roadrunners' Kevin Klebe rebounded from a first-round 80 to produce the final round's best score, a four-under-par 68 and wound up tied for sixth. Klebe's teammate, Ron Killmer, the first-round leader with a 69, also tied for sixth at 221.

Western Washington University, ranked 16th among NCAA Division II teams, was second at 881, 10 shots behind the winners. Josh Immordino finished second to Keller with an even par 216 on rounds of 72-70-74. Vikings' teammate Tim Feenstra was third at 219, three over par and the Vikings' Chris Anderson tied for fourth at 220.

Host Cal State San Bernardino was fourth at 901, 15 shots back of Bakersfield. The Coyotes were led by sophomore Adam Sepulveda who shot a two-under par 70 in the second round and finished at 221, also tied for sixth place. David Backus of CSUSB tied for 13th at 223 and produced the most pars of anyone in the tournament -- 38. The Coyotes team also led the tournament in pars with 165.

Coyotes' junior J.R. Reyes tied for 18th at 227 -- 11 over par. Teammates Frank Firman and Robert Mink finished 31st and 37th respectively.

About a third of the field had to complete Monday's second round on Tuesday morning because fog delayed Monday's start time.

Bakersfield produced the most birdies -- 52. Western Washington was 15 under par on the par-fives to lead all schools.
