HEAD COACH JIM MAIER
In just two seasons at the helm of the Toros softball program,
head coach Jim Maier has become one of the most successful coaches
in recent CSUDH history. Maier led the 2001 Toros to a 36-27
record, which tied a CSUDH record for most wins in a season. In
2002, CSUDH finished 32-22 overall and 20-12 in conference play
which was good enough for a second place tie in the tough
California Collegiate Athletic Association. In addition, Maier has
led ten players to all-conference recognition, and in 2002 Maier
helped to guide one standout to all-West Region honors. Maier
picked up his first win as a collegiate coach when the Toros
defeated Cal State Bakersfield 3-1 in the 2001 season opener.
WEBBER IS EMERGING AS A TOP PLAYER FOR THE
TOROS
Only a sophomore and 24 games into the 2003 season, outfielder
Ally Webber has already emerged as one of the top players for the
Toros. Webber has seen action in all 24 games, either as a DP, or
a center or rightfielder. She is posting a .333 batting average,
the highest on the squad, with 23 hits in 69 at bats. She has two
doubles, seven RBI, 10 runs, and 25 total bases. She is also
patient at the plate with a team-high nine base on balls. She had
a nine-game hit streak lasting from February 28 till the Toros 2-0
loss to Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday.
MAIER CAN'T GO WRONG IN THE LEAD OFF SPOT
Head coach Jim Maier can't go wrong when he chooses which player
to put into the leadoff spot. The Toros two main leadoff hitters,
Ally Webber and Natalie Sharp, have combined for 23 starts and 75
at bats. Webber has tallied 14 hits and six RBI with a .341
batting average in that slot, while Sharp has posted 11 hits,
three doubles and 11 RBI with a .324 average in the leadoff
position. Overall, the Toros are hitting .344 in the one position.
TOROS LIKE IT AT HOME
Cal State Dominguez Hills has taken a liking to Toro Diamond. The
Toros are 13-3 (.812) at home, with their only losses coming to
Sonoma State, CS Bakersfield and Concordia University. In fact,
the Toros had won seven straight on their home field, up until
their 1-2 loss to the Roadrunners last Saturday. On the road, they
are 4-3-1. They will look to pick up a couple more road wins when
they travel north for the San Francisco State/Sonoma State series
this weekend.
SEVEN AWAY
The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros like to steal...bases that is.
CSUDH has snatched 50 bags so far this season in 68 attempts. If
the Toros continue at this pace, a little over two steals per
game, they should look to shatter last year's total of 57. Cindy
Gates is leading the charge with eight stolen bases in nine
attempts.
O'HANIAN IMPRESSIVE IN THE CIRCLE
Hurler Kim O'Hanian is doing a nice job in the circle. The
freshman is 8-3 on the season and in 80+ innings of action, is
keeping her ERA to 0.61. She has only allowed 15 runs off of 52
hits with 32 strikeouts. She also has two saves. O'Hanian was
named CCAA Pitcher of the Week for the week of February 10-16.
O'Hanian was instrumental in the Toros 3-1 CCAA during the week of
Feb. 10-16. O'Hanian, a freshman from Norwalk, went 2-0 with a
1.17 earned run average to lead the Toros to CCAA wins over San
Francisco State and Sonoma State. In the Toros 5-2 victory over
SFSU, she went the distance allowing 1 earned run on 3 hits and a
walk while striking out 4. O'Hanian was also impressive on offense
helping herself at the plate, going 3 for 3 with an RBI.She came
back the next day to earn another win, allowing an earned run on 3
hits and a walk while striking out 2 Sonoma batters en route to an
8-1 win. O'Hanian went 2 for 4 with a run and RBI. She was the
first and only Toro to earn conference Player of the Week honors
so far this season.
