CARSON, Calif.- The Cal State Dominguez Hills
and Brigham Young University-Hawaii softball teams split a
non-conference doubleheader today at Toro Diamond in Carson, CA.
The Toros dropped game one 1-0, but picked up a 4-1 victory in the
second game.
Although the Toros posted seven hits to the
Seasiders three, an RBI single in the top of the seventh was all
it took for BYU-Hawaii to get a 1-0 win in the first game. The
Toros ran themselves out of innings one and three with baserunning
blunders.
CSUDH threatened to score in the fourth inning
when sophomore second baseman Dani Proctor opened the inning with
a single to right field and was advanced on a sacrifice bunt by
shortstop Natalie Sharp. After Proctor stole third, Seasider
hurler Echo Hatch popped up the next two Toro batters to retire
the inning.
Shea Seever started off the seventh inning with
a single down the left side for BYU-Hawaii. After she was
sacrificed to second, the next Seasider batter was walked. Another
sacrifice bunt would put the winning run on third base. With two
outs, Seasider Emily Lister drove one through the left side
scoring Seever.
CSUDH would look to send it into extra innings
as senior outfielder Renee Snyder would send a leadoff single into
the gap. It was her second hit in three at bats in the game. Jo
Orozco, who replaced Snyder as a pinch runner, stole second base
and was advanced to third by thirdbaseman Cindy Gates. The game
ended when the Toros lined out to the Seasider thirdbaseman.
Ally Webber had a strong game for the Toros as
the designated player, going two of three in game one.
Val Long was charged the loss in the contest,
her third of the season.
The Toros came out in the second game of the
twinbill looking for a win. The scoring started early for the
Toros, when in the bottom of the first inning Ally Webber added
another hit to her ledger with a single up the middle. A base hit
bunt by Gates, who beat out the throw to first, would put runners
on first and second. After the runners were sacrificed over,
freshman pitcher Kim O'Hanian blistered a single to centerfield to
drive home Webber and Gates.
It was almost an instant replay of the Toros
scores in the first inning, when in the bottom of the fifth with
two outs and bases loaded, O'Hanian sent a single up the middle to
score Dani Proctor, who reached on a base on balls, and Lori
Moreno, who laid a single in the gap. At the end of five, the
Toros were up 4-0.
The Seasiders used three consecutive hits in
the top of the six to spoil CSUDH'S chances at a shutout. With
bases loaded, Emily Lister sent a sacrifice fly deep into right
field scoring the runner on third.
Kim O'Hanian got the win in the circle, she is
now 9-3 on the season. She also helped herself at the plate where
she went two of three with four RBI.
CSUDH moves to 18-7-1 overall. They will take
on San Francisco State in a CCAA doubleheader on Friday at 1:00 pm
in San Francisco. |
