(14-19-1, 9-12) defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills (16-17, 10-15)
16-6 Friday afternoon in game one of the four-game series the two
teams will play this weekend at Maloney Field.
Cal State Dominguez Hills scored first as the
Toros crossed home plate four times in the first inning. Mike
Milstead with one out hit a solo shot to left field, his first of
the season. With two out and the bases loaded, Tony Marquez hit a
base clearing double (seventh of the season) to make the score 4-0
Toros.
The Gators scored two in the bottom of the
first as Shane Stover hit a two-run home run to right center to
score Jonno Caniezo.
SFSU took the lead for the first time in the
second inning as the Gators scored three more runs off of Toros'
starter Aldo Silva. Jacob Fuata opened up the inning with an
infield single. He advanced to third on a throwing error by the
Toros' third baseman. Keegan Moore walked and then Gabe Bruen hit
a RBI double down the left field line to score Fuata. Caniezo
reached on an error, which scored Moore. With one out and Gators
on second and third, Stover grounded out to short to score Bruen
to make the score 5-4 SFSU. The Gators never relinquished the lead
after that.
SFSU scored three more runs in the third with
Caniezo's two-run single being the big hit for Gators. SF State
also scored two runs in the fifth, three runs in the sixth, and
three runs in the eighth inning. The Gators' Wes Bentley hit a
solo shot in the sixth inning, his fourth of the season. The Toros
scored once in the fifth and once in the sixth to make the final
16-6 Gators.
Bruen finished the day going 3 for 3 with five
runs scored and a RBI while Stover drove in four runs. Caniezo had
three RBIs and Rigo Orozco had three hits and three RBIs also for
the Gators.
Aldo Silva (2-5) suffered the loss for the
Toros going 2.2 innings and walking two while giving up eight hits
and eight runs (five earned). Mike Milstead led the team at the
plate going 3-for-4 including a home run, while Tony Marquez went
2-for-3 with three runs driven in.
The two teams will be in action again tomorrow
afternoon beginning at noon at Maloney Field with game one of the
scheduled doubleheader.
