CARSON, Calif.--Steve Ferreira knocked in the
game-winning run with an RBI single in the top of the tenth inning
to give visiting Cal Baptist University a 10-9 win over Cal State
Dominguez Hills Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at
Toro Field.
The game was tied at nine runs apiece after
going into the tenth inning. With one out and runners on first and
second, Ferreira broke the nine-run deadlock with a bloop opposite
field single to left field scoring Eric Harryman with the
game-winning run.
CSUDH (18-19) got the scoring started early
pushing across three runs in the first. Eric Pringle led off the
inning with a triple and one out later scored on Joe Gevas' double
down the left field line. Ruben Salazar sent Gevas home on his
first of three doubles on the day. After an infield single by Tony
Marquez, Salazar scored on a balk by Lancer starting pitcher
Justin Hurd making it 3-0.
CBU (16-18) cut the deficit to 3-2 with two
runs in the third on a Steve Crouch sacrifice fly followed by an
RBI double off the bat of Oscar Enriquez.
Cal Baptist took the lead, 5-3, in the fourth
with a run-scoring single from Wigley followed by a two-run home
run to center field from Harryman, his fourth of the year.
But the Toros answered back in the bottom of
the fourth with four runs on four hits including Marquez's eighth
home run of the season, a two-run blast to right field. CSUDH also
got run-scoring doubles from Salazar and David Keesee in the
inning to take a 7-5 lead.
A single run by the Toros in the fifth on
Pringle's RBI double gave the Carson crew an 8-5 lead. However,
Cal Baptist put up their own four spot in the top of the sixth to
take a 9-8 advantage. In that inning, CBU rocked Don Bracken, who
started the inning and relief and was able to retire only one
batter. Ferreira knocked in a run with a single and one out later,
Enriquez hit a three-run home run over the right field fence.
The Toros tied it in the bottom of the inning
on Salazar's seventh home run of the year, a solo shot over the
left field fence. But that was all the runs the Toros could manage
the rest of the way. CSUDH threatened with two runners on and one
out in the bottom of the tenth, but Frank Perez lined into a 1-6
double play to end the game.
Harryman led the Lancers going 4-for-6 with two
RBI. Ferreira finished 3-for-5 at the plate while Enriquez drove
in four runs in the game going 2-for-4. Kevin Johnson (2-1) earned
the win going the final 3.0 shutout innings allowing only four
hits while striking out three batters.
For the Toros, Ryan Owen (0-2) suffered the
loss. The freshman left-hander was impressive going 4.0 innings in
relief allowing only one run on five hits while striking out
three. CSUDH was led at the plate by Salazar with a 4-for-5 effort
with three RBI on a home run and three doubles. Salazar is now
just one double shy of tying the school record for doubles in a
season. He now has 20 on the year. Tony Marquez also finished with
four hits going 4-for-4 on the day while leadoff man Eric Pringle
had three hits.
Cal State Dominguez Hills is back in CCAA
action this weekend hosting Sonoma State for a four-game series
beginning on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
