The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros (28-8-1)
are 5-0 after two days of pool play at the Easton Tournament of
Champions, hosted by CS Stanislaus.
On Friday, the Toros faced Western Washington
University in their opening game of the weekend. The Toros were
only able to get four hits, however with two of them being doubles
by Natalie Sharp and Renee Snyder, CSUDH went on to a 3-1 win.
Sharp was one of three in game one with one double and two RBI,
while Snyder was one of one with a double, a run and an RBI. Val
Long opened the tournament in the circle for the Toros. She tossed
5.2 innings allowing four hits and one run. Janet Briscoe came in
for relief of Long and threw 1.1 innings, allowing one hit while
striking out two for the save.
In game two, the Toros faced a 9-11 St.
Martin's squad. CSUDH had a little better game at the plate with
seven hits to defeat SMC 5-2. Ally Webber was impressive at bat,
going two or three with one run. CSUDH jumped to an early 3-0 lead
after the first inning and the Toro defense, behind pitcher Kim
O'Hanian would hold the Saints to four hits and two runs. CSUDH
was 2-0 after Day One.
In the opening play on Saturday, CSUDH shutout
Chaminade-Hawaii 3-0. Cindy Gates was two of three with two runs
and a stolen base in the victory. Natalie Sharp belted her second
double of the tournament in the win. Janet Briscoe went the
distance in the shutout, her first complete game and second win of
the season. She allowed five hits with no runs in the contest.
It would take eight innings for the Toros to
defeat Humboldt State. The Toro bats were hot with 11 hits in the
game. Ally Webber, playing against her former team, was stellar
from the plate. Webber was three of four, while Gates had another
strong game going two of three, Val Long held the Lumberjacks to
just six hits and three runs in the win.
The Toros would pick up their fifth win of pool
play with a 4-0 shutout of Seattle University. CSUDH had another
strong game on offense and Janet Briscoe was on her game once
again as she tossed a complete game with her second shutout of the
tournament.
The Toros will start championship play Sunday
at 12:30.
