Game 1 Game
2
DAVIS, Calif.--- Joe Gevas' one-out double in
the top of the seventh inning was all that stood between Trevor
Thornton and his first no-hitter as the Aggie right-hander faced
just two batters over the minimum with a seven-inning, one-hit
performance in UC Davis' 5-0 victory over Cal State Dominguez
Hills in the nightcap of a California Collegiate Athletic
Association baseball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Dobbins
Stadium. In the first game, the Toros pounded out 10 hits in
defeating the Aggies, 9-3.
With the split the Aggies move to 22-15 on the
season, 16-11 in CCAA play while the Toros go to 21-23 overall,
15-20 in conference action.
In the opener Dominguez exploded for six runs
in the top of the third to jump to a 6-0 lead. The Toros pounded
out six hits in the inning, including back-to-back, two-run
doubles from Tony Marquez and Zach Cort. The score would remain
that way until the eighth as both pitchers settled into a groove.
Toro starter Aldo Silva kept the Aggies at bay
for most of the afternoon as he scattered eight hits in his 7.1
innings of work. He allowed just five hits through his first seven
innings before running into trouble in the eighth. Coultas got
things going with a one-hit single, his third hit of the game.
Kamigawachi and David Butterworth then connected for back-to-back
doubles, the latter scoring two runs. Three batters later Dustin
Soderman lined a single to right, scoring Butterworth to cut the
lead in half at 6-3.
The deficit would grow back to six in the top
of the ninth as the first three Toros reached base and scored
thanks to a sacrifice fly off the bat of Eric Pringle and a
throwing error by UC Davis. Pinch-hitter Mike Roux singled in the
final run for the 9-3 lead.
Potter went 8.0 innings, allowing eight runs on
nine hits while striking out six as his record falls to 5-3.
Coultas went 3-for-4 in the game while Butterworth accounted for
two RBIs with his double.
Silva went 7.1 innings, allowing all three runs
on eight hits, striking out five as his record improved to 3-6.
Cort and Salazar each had a pair of hits for Dominguez Hills to
lead a 10-hit attack.
In the nightcap it was all Thornton as the
senior methodically retired the Toro batters, throwing first-pitch
strikes and getting batters to hit the ball on the ground. He
retired the first nine batters he faced, six on ground balls, and
had faced just one over the minimum heading into the seventh.
fter his second strikeout of the game, Thornton
threw a 1-0 pitch that Gevas hit down the rightfield line for the
Toros only hit of the game. Thornton retired the next two batters
for the one-hitter, the first by an Aggie since Ryan
Conners-Copeland accomplished the feat in 1996 against Chico
State.
Thornton got all the help he would need early
as the Aggies struck for two runs in the bottom of the first.
Robby Tulk led off with a single, stole second and scored on a
Matt Kamigawachi single to right. Ryan Coultas provided the second
run when he scored on a Ross Warner fielder's choice. UC Davis
added three more in the third off a two-run single from Andrew
Reisinger and an RBI groundout off the bat of Mark Wells.
Next for the Toros is a weekend series at home
with Hawaii Pacific.
