| Joe Gevas
named the 2002-2003 Winkelspecht Award winner |
CARSON, Calif.- It has been announced that
senior Toro baseball player Joe Gevas has been named the 2002-2003
Winkelspecht Award winner, as decided on by the Winkelspecht Award
committee.
The award is bestowed annually upon a CSUDH
student-athlete that has demonstrated evidence of great personal
character or achievement that has been recognized by the student-
athlete's educator and peers. The award is not meant to honor a
team MVP, but to recognize a student-athlete who always makes 100%
effort in the classroom and contributes in every way they can to
help the team succeed. The award will be presented to Gevas at the
annual Cal State Dominguez Hills Athletics Awards banquet on May
13.
Gevas has been a member of the Toro baseball
program for the past four seasons. During his career he has
received many team and conference honors, including First Team
All-CCAA honors last season and Honorable Mention accolades his
freshmen and sophomore campaigns.
While leading the team on the field as one of
the top outfielders and offensive players, Gevas also takes his
talents both on and off campus. He is involved in many clubs and
organizations, including the Student Athlete Advisory Council
(SAAC) and the Fellow Christian Athlete Club (FCA), which he
founded with former members of the baseball program. Gevas also
gives his time to the local communities by feeding the homeless.
Joe's success is also seen in the classroom as
he carries a 3.35 GPA in Business Administration with a
concentration in Information Systems.
The award is named in honor of Jennifer
Winkelspecht, a former volleyball player at CSUDH, who died in
August 1995. Her family has generously provided a perpetual trophy
in her memory, which is displayed on the second floor of the Cal
State Dominguez Hills library.
