CARSON, Calif.--Mike Roux's pinch hit three-run
triple in the fifth inning of the first game proved to be the
game-winner as Cal State Dominguez Hills held on for the 13-9 win
over visiting Hawaii-Pacific in the first game of non-conference
doubleheader. In the nightcap, the Toros got a strong effort from
senior starter Rick Moore tossing 7.0 innings while allowing only
one run to earn the 7-1 victory.

Hawaii-Pacific jumped out to an early 3-0 lead
in the first inning of the first game on an RBI double by Alika
Kuraoka and run-scoring singles from Scott Hunter and Ikaika
DuPont.
CSUDH got a run back in the bottom of the
inning on Ruben Salazar's 23rd double of the year making it 3-1.
The Toros added another run in the second then
took the lead, 6-3, in the third with four unearned runs. Mike
Milstead's two-run triple highlighted the four-run inning.
HPU battled back with four runs in the fifth to
take a 7-6 lead. In that inning, a leadoff single and walk chased
Toro starter Aldo Silva. Ryan Owen came on and gave up two runs on
a sacrifice fly and a groundout. Bryan Daguio's single to left
field tied the game then Shay Hirota's single gave the Sea
Warriors the lead.
But the Toros answered back in a big way with
six runs on six hits to retake the lead, 12-7. With two outs, Roux
cleared the bases with a triple deep to center field to give the
Toros a 9-6 lead. Joe Gevas and Tony Marquez added run-scoring
singles while Zac Cort pushed across a run with an RBI double in
the inning.
The Sea Warriors made it 12-9 in the sixth
after an RBI single from Tyler Ward and a run-scoring double from
Hunter. But CSUDH would add an insurance run in the bottom of the
inning, a solo home run by Milstead, to account for the final
margin. Milstead's homer gave the Toros 51 on the year breaking
the team mark of 50 set just last season.
Owen (1-3) earned his first collegiate win in
relief going 1.1 innings allowing four runs on seven hits. Chris
Ingstad pitched the final 1.2 scoreless innings to notch his
second save of the season. Cort led the team with three hits in
the game. Five others had two hits a piece including Salazar who
hit his 23rd and 24th doubles of the season.
Cruz Hatanaka (2-2) suffered the loss going the
first 4.1 innings allowing eight runs, four earned, on 10 hits.
Hunter led the squad at the plate going 2-for-3 with three RBI.
In the nightcap, CSUDH (25-23) got single runs
in the first, second and third innings and that was all they would
need as Moore was strong pitching the seven-inning complete game.
The Toros had a 13-hit attack to back Moore's performance to earn
the 7-1 victory.
Tony Marquez had an RBI double and single and
David Keesee added a run-scoring single to give the Toros a 3-1
lead after three innings.
CSUDH pushed across four more in the fifth to
account for the final. In that inning, Frank Perez and Keesee
provided RBI singles while Eric Pringle knocked in a run on a
double to highlight the inning.
Marquez led the team with three hits in the
game going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Eight of the Toros starter's had
at least one hit in the game.
Blane Muraoka (2-4) was tagged with the loss
going the distance allowing all seven runs, only three earned, on
13 hits as Hawaii-Pacific drops to 22-20 on the year.
The Toros and Sea Warriors play again next week
on Friday, April 25 in a single game beginning at 2:30 p.m.
