PATTERSON, Calif. Bill Noon shot a
3-over 219 to lead Cal State Bakersfield to its second straight
California Collegiate Athletic Association Mens Golf
Championship at Diablo Grande.
Bakersfield took a four-stroke lead into the
final day after finishing the first two rounds at 27-over par. The
tournament, played on the Ranch Course at Diablo Grande, featured
solid play despite sporadic rain showers and blustery winds that
hindered Mondays action.
Noon shot a tournament-best 5-under in round
one and carried a four-stroke advantage over reigning NCAA
Champion J.J. Jakovac of Chico State entering Tuesdays play.
Cal State Dominguez Hills finished eighth as a
team. The Toros' Francisco Reynoso was the team's low scorer,
finishing in a tie for 25th.
Noon and Jakovac weathered the elements en
route to the only even or subpar rounds on the day, both coming in
the first round. Cal State Stanislaus finished 2nd (911), followed
by Chico State (917) and UC Davis (917).
The top eight finishers received All-CCAA
recognition. In a vote of the coaches, Chico States Jakovac,
who tied for 4th at the tournament, received Most Valuable Player
of the Year honors for the second straight year. Jakovac finished
in the top 10 at 10 tournaments, winning two of those during the
season.
Cal State Stanislaus Ryan Thornberry
received Freshman of the Year after posting six top-10 finishes
this season. Thornberry finished the tournament tied for 17th.
Bakersfield coach Dave Barber was named Coach
of the Year for the second straight year.
