The Lumberjacks of Humboldt State were the
first to strike in the opening round of the NCAA West Regional
today at the Softball Complex on the campus of host Cal State
Bakersfield.
The #4 seed 'Jacks scored two runs in the
bottom of the first inning, highlighted by Andrea Williams's RBI
double to centerfield. Williams brought in Brandi Harrison who
reached on balls. HSU would put another run on the board when
Lacey Cope would drive in Williams with a RBI single sent to the
right side.
The #5 seed Toros would put together a rally in
the third, when two back-to-back singles by Clarissa Parga and
Courtney Woltz would put runners on first and second. After Parga
was replaced by pinch runner Lori Moreno, a wild pitch would
advance the Toros to second and third. With bases loaded after
Ally Webber was walked, Cindy Gates drove home Moreno and the
Toros found themselves behind by only one.
But another two run inning started off with a
leadoff single by Kelly Sosinski, followed by a triple driven deep
to centerfield by Williams, and a sacrifice fly for a run would
score two runs to put HSU up 4-1 after three.
Natalie Sharp would double down the left field
line to lead off the sixth inning and Daisy Flores would send a
single deep to center and a HSU error would advance her to second
and allow Sharp to score.
The 'Jacks would get runs in the fourth and
sixth, including a solo shot to put HSU on top 6-2 at the close.
The Lumberjacks used a nine hit attack in their
win, including two doubles, one triple and one homerun. Andrea
Williams went two of three with two RBI and two runs.
Kara Roberts went the distance in the win for
HSU. She allowed eight hits, two runs and walked only one while
striking out six.
For the Toros, three players, Sharp, Flores and
Woltz went two of three from the plate. Sharp had the only Toro
double of the day.
Janet Briscoe was charged the loss, she is now
6-2 on the season.
The Toros face a must win situation when the
play an elimination game tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
