Lumberjacks Defeat Toros 6-2 in Opening Round of NCAA Regional Softball Action

The Lumberjacks of Humboldt State were the first to strike in the opening round of the NCAA West Regional today at the Softball Complex on the campus of host Cal State Bakersfield.

The #4 seed 'Jacks scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by Andrea Williams's RBI double to centerfield. Williams brought in Brandi Harrison who reached on balls. HSU would put another run on the board when Lacey Cope would drive in Williams with a RBI single sent to the right side.

The #5 seed Toros would put together a rally in the third, when two back-to-back singles by Clarissa Parga and Courtney Woltz would put runners on first and second. After Parga was replaced by pinch runner Lori Moreno, a wild pitch would advance the Toros to second and third. With bases loaded after Ally Webber was walked, Cindy Gates drove home Moreno and the Toros found themselves behind by only one.

But another two run inning started off with a leadoff single by Kelly Sosinski, followed by a triple driven deep to centerfield by Williams, and a sacrifice fly for a run would score two runs to put HSU up 4-1 after three.

Natalie Sharp would double down the left field line to lead off the sixth inning and Daisy Flores would send a single deep to center and a HSU error would advance her to second and allow Sharp to score.

The 'Jacks would get runs in the fourth and sixth, including a solo shot to put HSU on top 6-2 at the close.

The Lumberjacks used a nine hit attack in their win, including two doubles, one triple and one homerun. Andrea Williams went two of three with two RBI and two runs.

Kara Roberts went the distance in the win for HSU. She allowed eight hits, two runs and walked only one while striking out six.

For the Toros, three players, Sharp, Flores and Woltz went two of three from the plate. Sharp had the only Toro double of the day.

Janet Briscoe was charged the loss, she is now 6-2 on the season.

The Toros face a must win situation when the play an elimination game tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
