CARSON, Calif.--Cal State Dominguez Hills
junior right-handed pitcher Larry Robles was selected by the
Colorado Rockies today in the seventh round of the 2003 Major
League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Robles, a local product from Mary Star HS and
El Camino JC, was Colorado's seventh pick and the 197th player
taken overall in the first day of the annual amateur draft. He is
believed to be the first-ever player drafted from Mary Star HS.
This past season, pro scouts came out in droves
to watch the junior phenom who features a 94-mph fastball to go
along with a nearly unhittable curve in his repertoire. Now, after
just one year in a Toro uniform, Robles is ready to show off his
talent at the professional level.
"I am just happy to get my
pro-career started," says Robles. "I have been preparing
for this my entire life and I am ready. This is what I was born to
do and I can't wait to get started."
In 2003, Robles led the California Collegiate
Athletic Association (CCAA) in strikeouts (99) while finishing the
campaign with a 6-2 record and a 3.61 ERA. Robles led the Toro
staff in innings pitched (89.2) and complete games (4) in 12
starts.
Being the first player selected from what is
considered the strongest NCAA Division II baseball conference in
the country did not come as a surprise.
"Larry is one of the most
talented pitchers we have ever had here at CSUDH," said Head
Coach George Wing. "He can dominate every time he goes to the
mound and there is no doubt in my mind that he will excel at the
next level. We are very proud of him and will certainly miss him
next year."
Robles is expected to sign his contract later
this week and at that time will receive word on where he will
report to camp.
