This series of
journal entries is from sophomore defender Jeff Kunze. This
tenth entry is the last of the series. Jeff finished his third
season in a CSUDH uniform after coming to the program in 2000
from Edison High School in Huntington Beach, CA.
Kunze has
established himself as one of the top defenders in the
California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and was
named to the All-CCAA team as a freshman during the 2000
season when the Toros won the NCAA II National Championship.
Kunze served as one of the Team Captains for the 2002 squad. |
 A
day of upsets is what it was. The top ranked teams losing all
across the country in the first round of the NCAA playoffs. Our
defeat came against Sonoma State. We had beaten them earlier in
the year 2-0 and we thought we could look past them and think
about the final four. However, we were in for a huge surprise.
Sonoma showed up to play and they definitely
outplayed us. We still managed to go up 2-0 in the opening of the
second half. However, they scored two goals to match ours and sent
the game into overtime.
The soccer Gods were definitely with Sonoma in
overtime because in the first overtime, one of their forwards
cracked a shot that was heading wide of the goal. Yet, the ball
found a way to deflect off one of our players and slowly roll over
the goal line. It was a horrible feeling to be so close and let
our season slip away from us.
So now we head into off-season. We have four
months to work on speed, quickness, agility, and strength.
I know the whole team is trying to look past
our devastating defeat and into the future where we have all
except four returners. We will be losing some great talent, but we
have a lot of young talented players who we are expecting to do
great things.
This is my farewell letter, so there will not
be any more entries for a while. I want to thank everyone for the
support you have given to the soccer program and we hope it
continues next year when we are back in full effect.
Till Next Time,
Jeff
PS- I want to throw a shot out to all the
seniors who are ending their college soccer careers. It has been
an honor to play with all of you and I wish nothing but the best
for you. |
