This series of
journal entries is from sophomore defender Jeff Kunze. Jeff
begins his third season in a CSUDH uniform after coming to the
program in 2000 from Edison High School in Huntington Beach,
CA.
Kunze has
established himself as one of the top defenders in the
California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and was
named to the All-CCAA team as a freshman during the 2000
season when the Toros won the NCAA II National Championship.
Kunze serves as one of the Team Captains for the 2002 squad. |
 It
is 12:45 on Sunday right now and I am about to get ready for our
game against Cal Poly Pomona. We played against Cal State San
Bernardino two days ago and beat them 3-1. They are a lot better
than they have been in the past years. However, when it came down
to battle for the victory, they were no match for the will of the
players on our team. We were down 1- 0, but we never gave up and
from that point on we dominated the rest of the game.
I know one thing that helps before a game is
when coaches Joe, Jeff, and even Nate give a speech. They always
seem to ignite something within our team. Whether it is at
halftime or before the game it always gets us going.
One thing that I am very impressed with is our
practice the day after the game. Usually this practice is routine
and a little slow due to fatigue and injuries. However, yesterday
was a very good practice. I remember one play where Scott (White)
and Eddie (Gonzales-Pinto) were sprinting for the ball and you can
just see how hard they were working. This is the kind of practice
we need day in and day out.
Well, I am going to go to my game now but I
will write the rest when I get home and tell you how the game
went.
I just got back from my game and we battled,
winning 1-0. We dominated the first half but the second half was
UGLY. I guess that is a sign of a good team though. Being able to
come out on top even when you have a bad game.
To end this journal entry I want to recognize a
couple people who do not get a whole lot of credit where credit is
due. First I want to thank our trainers for keeping our
team healthy. I want to thank the women's soccer team for
supporting our team and remember that we will be supporting you
throughout the season. And of course the fans, the more
support we have, the more motivated we get. All of these factors
contribute to your Toro's winning another national title.
Until next time,
Zoti Ju Bekoft!! (God Bless You)
PS - Jeff Joyner, I know you wanted to be in
the journal so I wanted to throw a shot out to you.
