Jeff's Journal: We Have Risen Over Our Milestones
A Diary by Jeff Kunze, Toros Soccer Player
October 28, 2002

This series of journal entries is from sophomore defender Jeff Kunze. Jeff begins his third season in a CSUDH uniform after coming to the program in 2000 from Edison High School in Huntington Beach, CA.

Kunze has established himself as one of the top defenders in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and was named to the All-CCAA team as a freshman during the 2000 season when the Toros won the NCAA II National Championship. Kunze serves as one of the Team Captains for the 2002 squad.

Jeff's JournalNo. 7 Today and tomorrow are preparatory days. We have put ourselves in a situation where we have to win both of our remaining two games to advance to the NCAA Playoffs. We just came home from a road trip to Stanislaus. We had a great game and came away with a 5-0 victory. Although we came away with a victory, we lost one of our best attackers.

Scotty White was taken out of the game because he hurt his leg. Now, let me discuss what happened in this situation. Scotty and the other player were going into what we call a "fifty - fifty" tackle. The other player decides it is a good idea to go into the tackle cleats up. This is the sign of an immature player. His team is losing 4-0, so he decides he should try and hurt someone. Well, he did not break his leg, but Scotty is now out due to injury.

We have some positive and negative factors that come from this game. The negative is that we lost one of our best players and we are playing one of the most important games of our season on Wednesday against Cal State Bakersfield. The positives are that we came away with a victory.

Now let's take a look into the future. On Wednesday, we have a huge game against one of our biggest rivals, Cal State Bakersfield who is now positioned ahead of us in the regional rankings. Whoever wins this game will most likely be the team to advance to the playoffs and possibly be the No. 1 seed. The first time we met this season we played at Bakersfield and defeated them on their own turf, 2-0. They have not lost since then, however, I feel very confident that we will win this game. We will have a team dinner before the game and become mentally prepared. We have risen over our milestones and now there is nothing and nobody who can stop us.

Before I end this entry, I would like to congratulate the girl's team for earning a spot in the CCAA tournament. Now the men and women's teams will be representing Cal State Dominguez Hills at Sonoma State in two weeks.

Till Next Time,
Jeff

PS- I just want to let our fans know how much we appreciate your support. We have a huge game on Wednesday and the more support we have the more energetic we get about the game.
