This series of
journal entries is from sophomore defender Jeff Kunze. Jeff
begins his third season in a CSUDH uniform after coming to the
program in 2000 from Edison High School in Huntington Beach,
CA.
Kunze has
established himself as one of the top defenders in the
California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and was
named to the All-CCAA team as a freshman during the 2000
season when the Toros won the NCAA II National Championship.
Kunze serves as one of the Team Captains for the 2002 squad. |
 I
hope everyone had a great weekend. If you have not already heard,
our soccer team had an awesome weekend.
We went up to Rohnert Park, CA for the
Conference Tournament on the campus of Sonoma State University.
First, we played UC San Diego. I thought we played a horrible game
and they had a very good game. However, we came out on top 1-0. We
had to play on artificial turf at a remote location because there
was lightning striking different parts at Sonoma State.
The other game was between Sonoma and CS
Bakersfield. The winner of that game would play us in the final.
It was a very exciting game and Bakersfield ended up winning on
penalty kicks. Destiny had brought us together for a third match.
We were a little nervous going into the game
because it was moved back to Sonoma where there was no grass,
however, there was a great deal of mud. We did not want them to
win because of a lucky goal that went in due to the conditions. We
knew that this game would be determined by who wanted it more.
It was evident that we wanted it more because
we came away with a 2-0 victory. This was our fourth CCAA
Championship in the past four years. The victory was celebrated by
pulling head coach Joe Flanagan and assistant coach Jeff Tuttle
into the mud!
Not only did we earn another championship, we
also earned the honor of hosting the first round of the NCAA
playoffs. We will host Sonoma State this Saturday at 1:00 at Toro
Field. Joe Flanagan was telling our team that we are starting a
new season right now. What we have accomplished up to this point
does not matter. We have four games between us and another
National Championship. Our goal is attainable and it will be
reached.
I was having a conversation with Pat Guillen,
our Sports Information Director, and he was telling me how cool my
parents are and how great all of our supporters are. We had a
great showing of support when we were in Sonoma and I would like
to thank all of our fans who made the trip. Just remember, we are
in the most difficult and the most exciting part of the season.
Please come support your Toros and we will bring home another
championship.
Till Next Time,
Jeff |
