CARSON, Calif.--Host Cal State Dominguez Hills
played its first men's soccer game ever in the new Toros Stadium
and came out on top in a matchup of two of the top teams in the
NCAA II Far West Region as they defeated Seattle Pacific
University, 2-0, in the FarWest Classic's opening round Saturday
night.
The match was the season opener for both teams
as Cal State Dominguez Hills is now 1-0 while Seattle Pacific gets
off to a 0-1 start to the 2003 campaign. In the early game of the
FarWest Classic, Chico State upset No. 8-ranked Barry University
(FL), 5-1.
Francisco Corona (Compton/Compton HS) scored
the only goal the Toros would need at 20:13 when he took a
crossing pass from the top of the box from Eduardo Serrano
(Toluca, Mexico) and sent his shot to the near post for a 1-0
lead.
CSUDH jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the
second half when Michael Jimenez (Gardena/Bishop Montgomery HS)
took a pass in front of the goal from Eddie Gonzales-Pinto
(Torrance/N. Torrance HS) and blasted his shot to the near post.
The Toros defense stifled SPU holding the
scoreless throughout despite only outshooting them 10-9.
In a bit of controversy in the 62nd minute of
play after Falcon David Smith was sent off the field with a red
card for a dangerous tackle, head coach Cliff McCrath was also
ejected after illegally entering the field of play. Smith or
McCrath will be unable to participate in the final day of the
FarWest Classic on Monday.
In the earlier match today, Chico State upset
Barry University (FL). Chico went into halftime up 2-1 and scored
three unanswered goals in the second half to cruise, 5-1.
Mike Lupton scored early for Barry at 3:24
blasting a shot from 20 yards out. However, Chico's Jesse Grigg
equalized at 31:10 heading in a shot off a corner kick.
The Wildcats took the lead, 2-1, at 42:51 when
Brian Phillips took a baseline pass from Chris Wondolowski and hit
his shot from six yards out.
Chico came out and scored two goals withing the
first five minutes of the second half. Wondolowski made it 3-1
when he took his own rebound off the goalie and knocked his shot
to the far post. Michael Esser then took a slot pass from Jaime
Rodriguez at the top of the box and cracked his shot to the far
net for a 4-1 lead. Woldolowski closed out the scoring just before
the end of regulation when he stole the ball inside the box and
sent his shot over the head of Barry keeper Ido Langer for the 5-1
final.
The FarWest Classic continues on Monday when
the Toros take on Barry University beginning at noon. Seattle
Pacific will play Chico State starting at 2:30 p.m.
