CARSON, Calif.--In a battle of the top two
teams in the Far West region, Cal State Dominguez Hills showed why
they are ranked No. 1 in the region by soundly defeating Cal State
Bakersfield Saturday in California Collegiate Athletic Association
play at Toro Field, 5-0. Victor Guerrero (Santa Ana/Century HS)
and Francisco Corona (Compton/Compton HS) lead the Toros with four
points each in the game.
CSUDH, ranked No. 2 nationally in the latest
polls, remains undefeated on the year at 6-0-0 and is now 2-0-0 in
CCAA play. Bakersfield, ranked No. 9 in the country, drops their
first game of the year and is now 4-1-1 overall and 0-1-1 in CCAA
action.
The Toros went up 1-0 at 30:36 on a fortuitous
goal by Guerrero. Bakersfield's Jason Doss-Carter attempted to
clear the ball inside the box but tapped it inadvertently to his
oncoming goalie, Josh Wicks. The ball ricocheted off Wicks side to
the feet of Guerrero who tapped home the empty net shot for his
first goal of the season.
CSUB threatened for most of the first 25
minutes of the second half controlling play. The Roadrunners
nearly tied the game in the 64th minute when Andrew Kelley had an
empty net from 15 yards out. However, his shot went off the
crossbar.
At 71:51, Cal State Dominguez Hills went up 2-0
when Jesse Graham (San Diego/Point Loma HS) scored his second goal
of the year. Graham took a beautiful pass inside the box from
Eduardo Serrano (Toluca, Mexico) and one-time his shot to the far
post.
Ryan Taylor (Chino Hills/Ayala HS) gave the
Toros a 3-0 lead just under two minutes later when at 73:15 off a
direct kick from Guerrero, Taylor headed his shot to the near post
from close range. Kevin Sosa (Torrance/Torrance HS) registered his
first goal of the year on a header over a drawn out goalkeeper
after taking a nice pass inside the box from Corona at 82:43.
Corona then closed out the scoring at 86:52
taking a nice through ball from Guerrero, dribbled past a defender
and beat Wicks' to the far post.
Today's win for the Toros is the 13th in row
against Cal State Bakersfield dating back to 1997.
Javier Barragan (Long Beach/LB Jordan HS)
notches his fourth shutout of the year while having to make only
one save in the game. Wicks gets the loss for Bakersfield while
making four saves on the day.
