CARSON, Calif.--The No. 2-ranked Cal State
Dominguez Hills men's soccer team awoke from their first half
slumber and gave their best imitation of "The Fast and the
Furious" by scoring three second half goals within a
15-minute stretch to earn an exciting 3-2 come-from-behind win
over Cal Poly Pomona in California Collegiate Athletic Association
action Monday at Toro Field.
With the win the Toros remain undefeated with
an 8-0-1 record and are 4-0-1 in CCAA play. Cal Poly Pomona drops
to 4-4-1 and 3-2-0 in league action.
The Toros found themselves in unfamiliar
territory when they were down by two goals, 2-0, midway through
the second period. However, Eddie Gonzales-Pinto (Torrance/N.
Torrance HS) scored in the 68th minute to trim the deficit to 2-1
when he took a free kick from Victor Guerrero (Santa Ana/Century
HS) from the right side.
Nine minutes later Francisco Corona
(Compton/Compton HS) collected a loose ball in the mouth of the
goal and sent his shot to the far post for the equalizer. Mikael
Hernholm (La Verne/Bonita HS) was credited with the assist.
Then at 82:59, senior All-American forward
Eduardo Serrano (Toluca, Mexico) tallied the game-winning goal on
a free kick from 20-yards out. Serrano curled his shot around the
Bronco wall and to the far post past the outstretched hands of
Pomona goalie Tim Sisk.
Cal Poly got on the board early just 1:48 into
the match when Andrew Pierce scored the first of his two goals on
a 30-yard blast to the upper far corner of the Toros net. Pierce
then made it 2-0 at 63:31 taking a pass from Jonathan Bornstein
and tapped his shot to the far post past Toros' goalie Javier
Barragan (Long Beach/LB Jordan HS). But the CSUDH defense would
shut the Broncos out the rest of the way to earn the win.
Cal State Dominguez Hills outshot Pomona 16-10
in the match.
CSUDH travels this Friday to take on Grand
Canyon University at 7 PM.
