CARSON, Calif.--Eduardo Serrano (Toluca,
Mexico) and Mikael Hernholm (La Verne/Bonita HS) scored two goals
apiece to lead the Toros to a convincing 5-1 victory over Humboldt
State Sunday afternoon at Toro Field.
CSUDH, ranked No. 6 in the latest NSCAA/adidas
national poll, elevates to 11-1-1 while Humboldt State drops to
2-13-0.
Serrano struck first in the 22nd minute, taking
a pass from Victor Guerrero (Santa Ana/Century HS) and launching
his 20-yard blast just inside the far post netting for a 1-0 lead.
Fourteen minutes later, Serrano tallied his
second goal of the game, and eighth of the season, off a direct
kick. Serrano drilled his shot to the upper far post from just
outside the top of the penalty box, making it 2-0.
The Toros took a 3-0 lead in the 51st minute
when Hernholm connected on a header off a beatiful pass inside the
box from midfielder Eddie Gonzales-Pinto (Torrance/N. Torrance
HS).
Ryan Taylor (Chino Hills/Ayala HS) then gave
CSUDH a 4-0 advantage in the 59th minute taking a long pass out of
the backfield from Jose Alvarado (San Diego/Chula Vista HS) and
chipping his shot just over the keeper and into the back of the
net.
Hernholm then registered his second goal of the
contest, and fourth of the year, in the 65th minute taking another
long pass from the back from defender Brian Suarez (San Pedro/Mary
Star HS), beating a defender and then the goalie, and nailing his
shot to the far post to make it 5-0.
Humboldt State finally got on the scoreboard in
the 82nd minute when Geoff Scott scored his first goal of the
season. Grant Dubois sent a corner kick inside the box that was
deflected by a Toro defender. Scott collected and sent his shot to
the near post for the HSU score.
Javier Barragan (Long Beach/LB Jordan HS)
earned his tenth win of the year while only having to make one
save in goal. Backup goalie Austin Anderson (Odessa, TX) played
the final 25 minutes while making four saves. Barret Schwerin
suffered the loss in goal for the Lumberjacks, registering five
saves. Nick Raisch came off the bench to start the second period
and gave up three goals while making five saves.
In the game, CSUDH outshot HSU 24-11 and
