ROHNERT PARK, Calif.--The Cal State Dominguez
Hills men's soccer team got goals from Francisco Corona and Victor
Guerrero to charge past defending National Champion Sonoma State
Friday, 2-0, in California Collegiate Athletic Association action.
The Toros, ranked No. 5 in the NSCAA/adidas
poll this week, elevate to 12-1-1 overall and 6-1-1 in CCAA play.
Corona's (Compton/Compton HS) goal was set up
in the 11th minute on a nice combo from Eduardo Serrano (Toluca,
Mexico) and Guerrero (Santa Ana/Century HS). Serrano played a ball
to Guerrero who sent his pass to Corona. Corona took the ball on a
breakaway, then beat the goalkeeper for the game-winning goal.
The Toros got their second goal on a corner
kick by Guerrero. In the 25th minute, Wilmer Lopez was fouled
inside the box setting up the PK for Guerrero. The SSU player was
red-carded and the Seawolves had to play a man down the rest of
the match. In that same series, Sonoma Head Coach Marcus Ziemer
was also sent off with a red card.
Later in the second half, SSU was forced to
play two men down after forward Kia Edwards was issued a red card
for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Javier Barragan earned the win in goal for the
Toros.
CSUDH is back in action on Sunday at San
Francisco State at 12:30 p.m.
