Bakersfield, Calif. A converted penalty
kick awarded to NCAA Division II No. 4 Cal State Dominguez Hills
(16-1-2 overall, 10-1-2 CCAA) early in the second half resulted in
the Toros taking a 1-0 win over Cal State Bakersfield (10-5-2
overall, 6-5-2 CCAA) at the Main Soccer Field on Wednesday night.
Cal State Dominguez Hills Mikael Hernholm
was sent on a breakaway on a pass from Rick Cobb, leaving him
alone with CSUB goalkeeper Josh Wicks on one of the Toros
few scoring chances of the night. Hernholm attempted to push the
ball to the left of Wicks, but the CSUB junior was able to touch
the ball away from the oncoming Toro. As Wicks jumped up to easily
gather the ball, referee Mark Arblaster blew his whistle and
pointed to the penalty spot to the surprise of nearly everyone in
the stadium.
After several minutes of arguing, Cal State
Dominguez Hills Victor Guerrero sent Wicks the wrong way to
convert the penalty and score the lone goal of the match. The goal
not only gave the Toros the lead, but it also allowed them to sit
back and play defense, changing the entire outlook of the match.
The only thing that resembled an offense the rest of the way was
the speedy Francisco Corona, who was left up top in an attempt to
catch CSUB pushing forward in search of the equalizer.
CSUB has now lost 13 of the last 14 matches
played against Cal State Dominguez Hills dating back to the 1997
season.
