Carson, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills senior
Tanya Wilson's (Palm Springs/Palm Springs HS) second goal of the
afternoon at the 83:52 minute mark proved to be the game winner,
as the Toros came back from one goal down by scoring two goals in
a span of four minutes, holding off the pesky Cal State L.A.
Golden Eagles on Saturday afternoon at Toro Field, 3-2.
With the win, the Toros conclude the regular
season at 15-3-1, 12-1-1 CCAA and look forward to the upcoming
CCAA Conference Tournament, beginning on Friday, November 7. Cal
State L.A. ends its season at 4-14-0, 3-11-0 CCAA.
The visiting Golden Eagles got off to a quick
start, using an Erica Jacalone goal at the 4:52 minute mark to
take a quick 1-0 lead. The Toros answered back 15 minutes later as
Wilson scored the first of her two goals on the afternoon. After
taking a feed from junior Kristen Walsh (Lakewood/Mayfair HS),
Wilson blasted her shot from the top of the box, beating the CSULA
goalkeeper to knot the score at 1-1.
Cal State L.A. would answer eight minutes later
as Nancy Uribe scored her first goal of the season to the upper
far post, sending the Golden Eagles into intermission with a 2-1
cushion.
After the break, the Toros continued to
pressure the visitors, outshooting the Golden Eagles 11-7 in the
second half. CSUDH's Wilson had a golden opportunity to tie the
game at the 60:30 mark, but sent her penalty kick wide left,
keeping the Toros' deficit at 2-1. Fittingly, on senior day, the
seniors led the comeback.
During the 80th minute, Laci Gruner (Long
Beach/Mayfair HS) collected, and sent her ball to a waiting Leslie
Taylor (Chino Hills/Ayala HS). Taylor, spotting Chantel Eastwood
(Lakewood/Mayfair HS) on the weak side, delivered a perfect ball
to the Lakewood native, who blasted her shot past the Golden Eagle
goalie at 80:25 to knot the score at 2-2.
Just over three minutes later, Wilson redeemed
herself and completed the comeback victory for the Toros,
rebounding her own shot and connecting to the far post to give the
Toros their first lead of the afternoon, and the ultimate win.
Senior Alba Garcia (Chino/Don Lugo HS) made
three saves in the victory while CSULA goalie Jessica Herrera
saved 11 balls in the loss. As a team, the Toros outshot the
Golden Eagles 26-12, highlighted by Wilson's match-high nine
attempts.
CSUDH readies for action on Friday, November 7,
as they host the CCAA Women's Soccer Championships on Toro Field.
The opponent is yet to be determined.
