CCAA Women's Soccer Championship Tournament: CSUDH Falls to UC San Diego in Title Match, 5-1
Toros await fate for NCAA Division II Championship pairings
November 9, 2003

Complete Box Score

CARSON, Calif. – Cal State Dominguez Hills’ run to the California Collegiate Athletic Association Women’s Soccer Championship was stopped by UC San Diego as the Tritons bested the Toros in the CCAA Championship match, 5-1, to win their fourth-consecutive CCAA Women’s Soccer Championship this morning on Toro Field.

The loss drops CSUDH to 16-4-1, while UCSD, playing its fifth game in seven days because of matches postponed by the southern California wildfires, improves to 16-2 overall. Both teams await the NCAA Division II Championship pairings, to be announced Monday afternoon.

UCSD’s Kristin Jones opened the scoring ix minutes into the game when she stole a pass deep in CSUDH territory and found the back of the net. The Tritons’ Shannon Harrelson made it 2-0 when she took a pass from Christine Wensel and connected on a header from the far post in the 23rd minute.

After UCSD’s Dickey scored at the 68:23 mark, the Toros answered 17 seconds later to cut the deficit to 3-1.

At 68:40, Nikki Szlak (Long Beach, CA/Los Alamitos HS) collected a loose ball and sent her shot to the back of the net at point-blank range, giving the Toros a much-needed boost.

Twelve minutes later, however, Dickey scored her second goal of the morning off a deflection, giving UCSD a 4-1 lead, and command of the game. An own goal in the 87th minute capped the scoring.

“It was never a 5-1 game,” Triton coach Brian McManus said. “ It was probably a 2-1 or 3-2 game. It was just one of those days where everything we touched near the penalty box, we scored.”

UC San Diego outshot Cal State Dominguez Hills, 19-10, to the dismay of CSUDH coach Joe Flanagan.

“We came out a bit flat and we didn’t play our best game. Taking nothing away from UC San Diego, but we didn’t come up with our best today. Now another season begins, so it’s good to get our bad game out now.”
