CARSON, Calif.-Cal State Dominguez Hills opened
up its 2003-04 home schedule in unspectacular fashion with
visiting Cal Baptist upending the Toros, 92-81, Friday night in
the Torodome.
CSUDH drops below .500 on the year and is now
1-2, while Cal Baptist improves to 4-2.
Cal State Dominguez Hills took a 42-41 lead
into the locker room after 13 first-half points by point guard
Antoine Griffin (Long Beach/LB Millikan HS). The margin would have
been four points, but the Lancers' Tyler Ojanen hit a
buzzer-beating half court shot to send the visitors into the
intermission on a high note.
CBU opened up the second half with an 11-3 run
in the first two minutes to take the lead, 52-45. The Lancers
built its lead up to as many as 10 points, 72-62, with 7:59 left
before the Toros would mount a comeback.
Griffin scored five points during a 7-2 run to
trim the deficit to 74-69 with 5:51 remaining. But Cal Baptist
answered each Toro run tonight, this time going on a 8-3 spurt to
take control with just three minutes left. The Lancers sealed the
game making 8-9 of its free throws to account for the final
margin, 92-81.
Griffin led all scorers with 28 points on 8-13
from the floor including 6-7 from beyond the 3-point arc. Eric
Crookshank (Vallejo, CA) followed, pouring in 21 points while
grabbing a game-high 12 boards. CSUDH shot well this evening
making 56% (28-50) of its shots, but turnovers proved costly with
Cal Baptist scoring 19 points off of 17 Toro miscues.
Seidel led three CBU players in double-digit
scoring with 25 points, including 5-7 from behind the three-point
line. Tevis Jones poured in 22 points and Ojanen chipped in with
17 on the night. Ronnie McMillan came off the bench to grab a
team-high seven rebounds.
CSUDH is back in action on Monday traveling to
Dominican University (CA). First tip is set for 7:00 p.m.
