Carson, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills
sophomore Zipporah Chase's (Los Angeles, CA/Carson HS) team-high
17 points led a balanced Toro offense, while her three steals led
a harassing CSUDH defense as the Toros won their
second-consecutive game to start the season, handing the visiting
Biola Eagles an 84-60 loss Saturday night at the Torodome.
CSUDH improves to 2-0 on the young season while
Biola drops to 3-2.
After the visiting Eagles took a slim 9-6 lead
at the 14:19 mark, CSUDH used eight points by both Chase and
Octavia Askew (Van Nuys, CA/Birmingham HS) to outscore Biola,
32-20, the rest of the half, taking a 38-29 lead into the locker
room.
Hot-shooting Lindsay Peloza (Alisa Viejo,
CA/Saddleback JC) and Monique Marquez (Rialto, CA/Eisenhower HS)
chipped in with six points apiece in the first 20 minutes of play,
with all of Peloza's points coming from beyond the three-point
arc, to bolster the Toro run, while the defense harried the Biola
offense into 13 first-half turnovers.
The Toros continued their momentum in the
second half, running out to a 51-39 lead on a Tameka Blue
(Watsonville, CA/Santa Cruz HS) three-pointer at the 15:11 mark.
Bolstered by Chase's nine points in the half
and eight each by Blue and Crystal Maciel (Los Angeles, CA/Los
Angeles, CC), CSUDH pushed its lead to as much as 28 points on a
successful Lucinda Perez (Huntington Park, CA/South Gate HS) free
throw. The Eagles attempted a run, but never got closer than 18
points (78-60) the rest of the way. The Toros scored the final six
points of the contest to end the game at 84-60.
CSUDH's defense again was a key contributor to
tonight's victory, causing 30 Biola turnovers after forcing 34
turnovers in its season-opening victory against Cal Baptist on
November 25.
Blue continued her stellar play, scoring 13
points on 4-for-9 shooting from the field, including 3-for-6 from
behind the arc. Maciel poured in 11 points, with nine coming by
way of the three-point shot. Senior Marquez and junior Askew
contributed with 10 points apiece, rounding out the five Toros in
double-figures.
Biola's Elizabeth Matthews led all scorers with
a game-high 21 points, while Sarah Baird, BU's leading scorer who
averaged 21 points coming into tonight's contest, was held
scoreless in 21 minutes of action.
The 84-point total was the highest offensive
output generated by CSUDH's women since defeating Grand Canyon,
95-54, on February 17, 1996.
