LOS ANGELES, Calif.-Zipporah Chase (Carson,
CA/Carson HS) led Cal State Dominguez Hills to its
third-consecutive win to start the season with 20 points and a
career-high 19 rebounds as the Toros won its California Collegiate
Athletic Association season opener over Cal State L.A., 82-65, at
the Eagles Nest in Los Angeles.
With the victory, CSUDH improves to a perfect
3-0 and 1-0 while Cal State L.A. falls to 1-2 and 0-1 in league
action.
It looked early on that the Toros were going to
have a good night holding the Golden Eagles scoreless in the first
six minutes of the game while jumping out to an 11-0 lead. CSUDH
used a 27-12 run over the next ten minutes to take a commanding
26-point lead, 38-12, with 4:40 remaining in the first half.
During that run, the Toros got nine points from Monique Marquez
(Rialto, CA/Eisenhower HS) and eight points from Lindsay Peloza
(Aliso Viejo, CA/Capistrano Valley HS) combing for four
three-point baskets.
Cal State Dominguez Hills went into halftime
with a 42-20 lead after holding CSULA to 22.2% shooting (6-27)
from the field. The Toros on the other hand made 48.1% (13-27) of
their shots.
CSUDH came out of the intermission and opened
up a 32-point lead, 58-26, during the first seven minutes after a
Javonda Moss (Corona, CA/Norco HS) basket with 13:24 left in the
game. Cal State L.A. was able to trim the deficit to 15 points
late in the game but would get no closer as the Toros went on for
the 82-65 win on the road.
CSUDH used a swarming defense and solid
rebounding to win its CCAA season debut. The Toros outrebounded
Cal State L.A. 44-34 and forced 25 turnovers in the game. After
Chase's double-double 20 points and 19 boards, CSUDH's Crystal
Maciel (Los Angeles, CA/Southgate HS) poured in 12 points on 4-6
shooting from beyond the three-point line. Marquez also finished
in double figures with 11 points.
Cal State L.A. was led in the losing effort by
Shanna Demus with 19 points and a team-high seven boards. Monica
Tokoro followed with 14 points and Jacquelyn Tennies came off the
bench to contribute 10 points, six of them from the charity
stripe.
Cal State Dominguez Hills will be looking for
its first 4-0 start to begin the season since 1995-96 when they
host non-conference Point Loma Nazarene University this Tuesday,
December 9. First tip in the Torodome is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
