(Rohnert Park)-- Behind 21 points from Ryan
Hensel and 15 from James Tipton, the Sonoma State Seawolves came
from behind to defeat Cal State Dominguez Hills 67-64 on Saturday
night at Seawolf Gym. After trailing by six at the half, the
Seawolves hit 15-of-17 free throws in the second half to propel
them to victory.
With the win, SSU improved to 3-8, 2-4 CCAA,
while CSUDH fell to 5-6, 3-3 CCAA.
Both teams shot exactly 50% in what appeared to
be a very even first half. Saul Lankster and Eric Crookshank each
had 12 first half points to give the Toros a slight 36-30
advantage at the break.
In the second half, the Seawolves rallied
behind the strong play of Hensel and Tipton, who scored 21 of
their combined 36 points in the second frame. Tipton also used
aggressive play to come down with nine rebounds including three
off the offensive glass.
After a 5-0 Seawolf spurt to start the half,
the teams played neck and neck for the next 14:00 minutes before
the Seawolves came up with several big stops on the defensive
side. In the process of holding the Toros scoreless for over four
minutes late in the half, the Seawolves scored five points of
their own to put a little breathing room between the teams. The
Seawolves didn't let up in the final minutes and walked away with
their second win in their last three games.
Lamar Abbott was also in double-figures for the
Seawolves, finishing with 12 points. Chris Getty had a team-high
four assists as well as nine points.
Eric Crookshank went for 19 points and nine
rebounds for CSUDH while Saul Lankster had 17 points off the
bench. Antoine Griffin played the entire game at the point and
finished with 10 points.
The Toros return to action next weekend when
they host Cal State Bakersfield (Friday) and Cal State Stanislaus
(Saturday). |
