Carson, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills seniors
Geovanny Aispuro (Long Beach, CA/Cerritos JC) and Antoine Griffin
(Long Beach, CA/CS Monterey Bay) each scored a team-high 14
points, and the Toros used a 55.6% to 35.9% shooting percentage to
take a 74-63 decision over visiting Cal State Stanislaus on
Saturday night at the Torodome.
With the win, CSUDH improves to 6-7, 4-4 CCAA,
equalling its conference win total from last season. CSUS falls to
3-10, 1-7 CCAA.
The Toros found their rhythm early from tipoff,
taking a 10-1 lead with just under four minutes elapsed in the
first half, thanks to four quick points by Griffin and a
three-ball from Aispuro. The Warriors cut the Toro lead to 10-8,
but two Ryan Meilleur (Lakewood, CA/Artesia HS) jumpers brought
CSUDH's advantage back to nine at 17-8.
After an Eric Crookshank (Vallejo, CA/Chabot
JC) jumper gave the Toros their largest advantage of the half at
31-20, the Warriors outscored Cal State Dominguez Hills 10-4 the
rest of the half, giving the Toros a slim 35-30 advantage entering
intermission.
Aispuro began the second half still in rhythm,
knocking down a long three-ball to give CSUDH a 40-30 lead with
18:20 left in regulation. CSUS would answer, however, whittling
the Toro lead point by point, until a Rick Fetter jumper at 13:08
gave the Warriors their first lead of the contest at 44-43.
The two teams would battle evenly, tying six
times over the next 10 minutes, but another three-pointer by
Aispuro, a jumper by Lamar Lawrence (Hawthorne, CA/Pasadena CC)
and a jumper by Malik Harris (Oakland, CA/Berkeley HS) gave the
Toros a boost, and a 66-59 lead with 2:10 left on the clock.
After a CSUS jumper trimmed the lead to five, a
pair of Harris free throws, and one free throw each by Aispuro and
Lawrence closed the scoring, giving the Toros a hard-fought 74-63
win.
Lawrence added 11 points and four boards in the
contest while Crookshank grabbed a game-high tying eight boards.
Griffin added a game-high six assists to his statline, sinking all
six of his shots from the line.
For the Warriors, Jamal O'Quinn led all scorers
with 16 points, while Kevin Massey and Fetter each added 10 in the
loss.
The Toros travel to Cal State San Bernardino
and Cal Poly Pomona next weekend, before returning home to battle
UC Davis and Chico State in conference doubleheaders the weekend
of January 30 and 31.- |
