SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State Dominguez Hills
rallied from a 12-point deficit early in the second half to defeat
Cal State San Bernardino 64-58 Friday night in a California
Collegiate Athletic Association women's basketball game before 324
fans in Coussoulis Arena.
Freshman center Zipporah Chase scored 15
points, including converting a three-point play with 4:35
remaining in the game to give the Toros their first lead of the
game at 50-49.
Former Rialto Eisenhower HS star Monique
Marquez scored 11 of her 14 points in the second half to aid the
comeback, while Natasha Gray came off the bench to score 12 points
down the stretch.
The win improved the Toros to 8-6 overall and
4-5 in the CCAA while the Coyotes slipped to 6-8 overall and 3-6
in the conference. Dominguez Hills moves on to play at Cal Poly
Pomona Saturday night while the Coyotes host Cal State L.A. at
5:30 p.m.
Hannah Low provided most of the offense for the
Coyotes with 19 points. She also had six rebounds. Joyce Proctor
finished with 10 points. Amanda Fitzgerald dished off nine assists
and made four steals from her point guard position. Sequoia
Williams led all players with eight rebounds.
The Coyotes outshot the visitors 49 percent to
46 percent and outrebounded them 29 to 19 but were plagued by 29
turnovers, 15 of them in the second half as the Toros outscored
them 9-0 in a six-minute stretch to tie the game at 47-all. In
all, the Coyotes were outscored 26-11 in the final 10 minutes of
the game.
The Coyotes roared to a 15-4 lead in the first
six minutes of the game aided by back-to-back three-pointers by
Low. The Toros responded and closed the gap to 19-16 with 8:21
left before intermission and took a 29-24 lead to the locker room
at the half.
CSUSB outscored the Toros 9-2 to open the
second half and led 40-28 with 16:15 remaining and still led by
nine at 47-38 on a three-pointer by Fitzgerald with 10:08 left.
Then the Coyotes went scoreless until Low sank
a pair of free throws with 4:35 left for a 49-47 lead. Low
followed Chases' three-point play with two more charity tosses for
a 51-50 lead at the 3:55 mark. However, Marquez sank two free
throws and gray made a jumper for a 54-51 Toros lead. Another Gray
basket and two more free throws by Marquez made it 58-52 with 1:11
to go.
In all there were 48 turnovers in the game.
Next up for the Toros is a road game at Cal
Poly Pomona Saturday night (Jan. 24).
