POMONA -- Cal Poly Pomonas mens
basketball team played well down the stretch and pulled away for a
72-62 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday night in
Kellogg Gym.
Cal Poly Pomona (11-4, 7-3 CCAA) won its fifth
straight game and was victorious for the eighth time in nine
games.
The game was a defensive struggle in the first
half and the Broncos held a slim 26-25 edge at halftime. The
Broncos led by as many as seven points in the first half, 22-15,
after a 3-pointer by Boyd. The Toros, though, closed the half on a
10-4 run to make it close.
The Toros (6-9, 4-6 CCAA) grabbed one-point
leads three times in the second half, the final time at 44-43. The
Broncos took the lead for good on a 17-foot jumper by Cook with
9:38 to go.
The Broncos needed impressive play down the
stretch to pull out the victory. The game was tied at 47-47 with
9:53 to go, but Cal Poly Pomona scored the next eight points and
led the rest of the way. The Broncos boosted their lead to 12
points, 63-51, with 4:05 remaining and led comfortably the rest of
the way.
Jeff Bonds and Michael Ridgway led the Broncos
with 14 points each. Bonds also had five rebounds, while Ridgway
also had four rebounds. The Broncos also got another strong game
from David Sybesma, who recorded his second double-double in three
games with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Antoine Griffin had a sensational game for the
Toros, pouring in a game-high 27 points to go along with five
rebounds and five assists. Saul Lankster added 10 points and three
rebounds.
Cal Poly Pomona enjoyed a big advantage from
its bench. The Bronco reserves outscored Cal State Dominguez Hills
reserves, 30-14. Ridgway led the way with 14 points, while Dion
Cook and Jonathan Boyd had seven points each. Jason Burrell had
two points and two assists and did an admirable defensive job in
the second half trying to contain Griffin.
Cal State Dominguez Hills play in the Torodome
next weekend, hosting UC Davis Friday night and Chico State
Saturday night. |
