POMONA – Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team’s lengthy winning streak over Cal State Dominguez Hills ended with a thud Saturday night as the Broncos (10-5, 6-4) fell to the Toros, 71-59 in Kellogg Gym.

The defeat snapped a 14-game winning streak over the Toros and was the first loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills in Kellogg Gym since the 1995-96 season.

Cal Poly Pomona led 6-4 with less than 14 minutes remaining in the first half before a three-pointer by Blue gave Cal State Dominguez Hills the lead for good. The Broncos kept it close, keeping the deficit in single digits for the rest of the half, and headed into halftime trailing 37-30.

Things worsened dramatically for the Broncos in the second half. A basket by Askew capped a 10-0 run to open the half for the Toros, giving Cal State Dominguez Hills a 47-30 lead and Cal Poly Pomona posed no serious threat after that. The 17-point lead was the largest for Cal State Dominguez Hills in the game, but Cal Poly Pomona was unable to get the deficit into single digits the rest of the way.

Cal State Dominguez Hills (9-6, 5-5) was led by Octavia Askew with 19 points. Zipporah Chase added 18 points for the Toros, and Tameka Blue had 12.

Brandi Fletcher led Cal Poly Pomona with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Candice Allen and Jaida Williams chipped in with 12 points apiece, while Shanika Perkins added 11 points for the Broncos.

As a team the Toros shot 50 percent shooting from the field, including 5-for-11 from three-point land.

Cal Poly Pomona could not help its own cause on the offensive end, shooting just 30 percent from the field in the first half and 34 percent in the second half. The Broncos also missed nine of their 10 tries from behind the 3-point arc.

The Broncos dominated the offensive glass, 19-7, but to no avail. The Broncos did not get into a flow on the defensive end of the court either, as the Toros torched them for 65 percent shooting from the field in the first half while making 15 of their 23 attempts.

Cal State Dominguez Hills play in the Torodome next weekend, hosting UC Davis Friday night and Chico State Saturday night.
