Carson, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills senior
Lamar Lawrence (Hawthorne, CA/Bishop Montgomery HS) tied for
game-high honors by scoring a career-high 20 points, but the
visiting UC Davis Aggies outscored the Toros 45-20 in the decisive
second half to take a 75-49 decision over CSUDH on Friday night in
the Torodome.
CSUDH falls to 6-10, 4-7 CCAA, while UCD
improves to 10-6, 7-4 CCAA.
Lawrence was on fire in the first half, sinking
5-of-6 shots and 3-of-4 free throws en route to 13 first-half
points, staking the Toros to an early 17-5 lead. The Aggies,
however, behind eight points by Ryan Moore and a three-pointer
each by Rommel Martinez and Ari Warmerdam would outscore the Toros
16-2 to take a 24-20 lead with 7:09 remaining in the first frame.
Behind two Lawrence buckets, however, CSUDH
would cut the lead to a single digit, closing UCD's lead to 30-29
entering the half.
The visiting Aggies controlled the second half,
increasing their lead to 45-37 on a Moore jumper with 12:51 left
in regulation. An ensuing Geovanny Aispuro (Long Beach, CA/LB
Jordan HS) three-pointer cut the deficit to 45-40, but UCD would
outscore the Toros 14-7 over the next seven minutes, taking a
59-47 lead and control of the contest.
UC Davis would continue to find the bottom of
the net, increasing its lead to as much as 20 points on another
Moore jumper, before scoring the last two points of the contest,
courtesy of two Warmerdam free throws, to take the 75-49 victory.
Lawrence finished the game sinking 7-of-10
shots from the field and 6-of-9 from the charity stripe. Eric
Crookshank (Vallejo, CA/Hogan HS) led the Toros with seven boards,
while Antoine Griffin (Long Beach, CA/Millikan HS), Aispuro and
Malik Harris (Oakland, CA/Berkeley HS) chipped in six points
apiece.
For the Aggies, Moore matched Lawrence's
20-point total to lead UCD, while Robert Ehsan's 15 and Fowzi
Abdelsamad's 11 points rounded out the Aggies' double-figure
scorers. Moore also tallied game-high honors in rebounds, grabbing
eight on the evening.
The Toros shot 22.6% in the second half after
nailing 50% of their first-half attempts, while the visitors
blistered the nets after intermission, sinking 64% of their shots
from the floor and making 9-of-10 shots from the charity stripe.
The Toros host Chico State tomorrow night at
the Torodome, with first tip beginning at 7:30 p.m.
