Carson, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills
sophomore Zipporah Chase (Los Angeles, CA/Carson HS) made 9-of-13
from the floor and drained 3-of-4 from the charity stripe en route
to a game high 21 points, all while adding a game-high 10
rebounds, as the Toros won their fourth-consecutive game in
charging to a convincing 79-67 win over visiting UC Davis on
Friday night at the Torodome.
CSUDH improves to to 10-6, 6-5 CCAA, while UCD
falls to 11-6, 6-5 CCAA.
Both teams came out strong after tipoff, with
CSUDH taking a quick 5-2 lead on a Keesha Aldridge (Aiea, HI/Aiea
HS) free throw at the 18:18 mark. The Toros would continue to keep
the visitors at arm's length, thanks to Chase's team-high eight
points in the first 20-minute frame.
UC Davis would take a 22-19 lead on a
three-pointer by Jennifer Decur with 8:40 left in the first half,
but a string of three-consecutive jumpers by Chase, Lindsay Peloza
(Alisa Viejo, CA/Capistrano Valley HS) and Joi Cooper (Long Beach,
CA/Chaparral HS) would give CSUDH its biggest lead of the half at
37-31 with 1:50 remaining. Free throws by UCD's Jackie Turpin
would trim the deficit, giving the Toros a 39-36 advantage
entering the half.
CSUDH's stifling defense would dictate the pace
after intermission, limiting the Aggies to just four points with
8:05 elapsed in the second half. The Toros would seize the
opportunity, increasing their lead to 62-47 on a Tameka Blue
(Watsonville, CA/Santa Cruz HS) jumper with 9:06 remaining in
regulation.
The Aggies would mount a slight comeback, but
bolstered by Chase's 13 second-half points, the Toros would keep
control of the game, as UCD would get no closer than nine points
the rest of the way. A Chase jumper with :45 would account for the
final scoring, giving the Toros a convincing 12-point win.
Octavia Askew (Van Nuys, CA/Birmingham HS)
contributed 12 points on 6-of-11 shooting while Peloza and Crystal
Maciel (Los Angeles, CA/South Gate HS) each chipped in with 10
points. Off the bench, Cooper sunk 4-of-6 buckets in just 15
minutes of action.
For the Aggies, Kim Omer led the visitors with
17 points, followed by Decur's 16 points. Decur and Jessica
Campbell would lead UCD with each boards apiece.
The Toros held the Aggies to just 39.3%
shooting from the field, including 34.5% in the second half during
which UCD made only 10-of-29 shots.
CSUDH, on the other hand, finished the game
shooting 54.8%, following a blistering opening set in which the
Toros shot 65.4% (17-of-26).
