February 1, 2004

CARSON, Calif.--Cal State L.A. pounded out 16 hits on the day to beat Cal State Dominguez Hills 11-5 in the final game of the Quartz Sports-CSUDH Preseason CCAA Baseball Tournament today at Toro Field.

CF Mike Miller led the Golden Eagle offense with four hits in the game in six trips to the plate. CSUDH got on the board in the second on a sacrifice fly by 2B Pedro Montero (San Fernando/San Fernando HS) to take a 1-0 lead. CSULA tied the game in the third on an RBI double off the bat of SS Matt Winkleman.

The Toros regained the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the inning on a single by 3B Ruben Salazar (Lynwood/St. John Bosco HS). But the Golden Eagles answered again with two runs in the fifth on a leadoff homer by 3B Jeff Carroll and another run-scoring double from Winkleman to take a 3-2 lead.

Salazar knotted the game once again with his second homerun in as many days, a leadoff jack to straight-away center field.

Cal State L.A. went up 4-3 in the seventh on a Winkleman single, driving in his third run of the game. But the Toros once again answered in the bottom of the inning. With runners on the corners, DH Jose Montes (Pacoima/San Fernando HS) hit a sacrifice fly to left field making it 4-4.

Cal State Dominguez Hills did not have an answer though after the Golden Eagles scored seven runs over the final two innings, including six in the top of the ninth to take an 11-4 lead. The big blows came off two-run doubles off the bats of 1B Scott Moore and RF Mateo Marquez. LF Das Jesson also drove in two with a single later in the inning.

The Toros got a run in the bottom of the ninth when Montes hit his first home run of the season, a long shot over the left-center field wall to account for the final.

Reliever Cody Wilkinson (1-0) took the win tossing 3.0 middle innings allowing two runs on five hits. CSULA starter Kyle Schneider went the first 4.0 innings allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits while striking out four. Derrick Loop came on in the eighth and pitched the final 2.0 innings to earn his first save of the year.
