RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004) -
Senior LHP Joey Lessa (Riverside, CA/Ramona HS) pitched eight
excellent innings and CBU Coach Gary Adcock won his first game as
a collegiate head coach as the California Baptist University
baseball team routed visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills, 12-1, on
Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference game.
CBU improved to 1-4 this season, while CSUDH
fell to 1-2.
Lessa (1-0) gave up just one run with six hits
and two walks while striking out five. It was the 21st win of his
four-year career. Senior RHP Justin Hurd (Riverside, CA/J.W. North
HS/Riverside CC) pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
Senior 1B Steve Ferreira (Riverside, CA/J.W.
North HS/UC Riverside) and junior SS Ryan Wigley (Bakersfield,
CA/Bakersfield Christian HS/College of Sequoias) each had three
hits for the Lancers, and senior LF Nick Gor (Yorba Linda,
CA/Esperanza HS/Oral Roberts Univ.) slugged a two-run home run in
the fifth inning.
The Toros took a 1-0 lead in the top of the
second inning on a leadoff solo home run by junior DH Jose Montes.
Although CSUDH was able to get runners into scoring position in
the third, fourth and fifth innings, Lessa and the Lancer defense
prevented any more runs from scoring.
Meanwhile, the Lancers went ahead for good with
two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Gor scored on a wild
pitch and freshman CF Jordan Monroe (Corona, CA/Santiago HS) hit a
sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the fourth, CBU exploded for
five runs and a 7-1 lead. Wigley had an RBI single and freshman 3B
Kevin Wright (Corona, CA/Ontario HS) hit a two-run double down the
left-field line.
Gor's home run made it 9-1 in the fifth inning,
and a pair of Toro errors helped make it 11-1 before the inning
ended.
CBU's last run came in the bottom of the eighth
as sophomore PH Bobby Alworth (Grand Junction, CO/Grand Junction
HS/Otero JC) doubled home a run.
The Toros got two hits apiece from senior LF
Jason Flores and junior 3B Ruben Salazar. Starting LHP Ryan Owen
(0-1) lasted 3 1/3 innings and took the loss.
Next up for CSUDH is a road contest at
Vanguard.
