COSTA MESA, Calif.--The Toros offense used 17
hits on the day, including three from 3B Ruben Salazar, to down
Vanguard University, 6-2, today in non-conference action in Costa
Mesa, CA.
CSUDH is now even with a 2-2 record while the
Lions drop to 1-2.
The Toros manufactured their first runs in the
second inning to take a 2-0 lead. With one out, RF Zac Cort
reached on an infield single then promptly stole second base. SS
Fernando Hernandez drove him in with a single to left making it
1-0. Hernandez then stole second and scored later on a Houston
Hernandez double.
Cal State Dominguez Hills took a 4-0 lead in
the seventh inning on an RBI single by Salazar followed up with a
run-scoring single to center field off the bat of DH Jose Montes.
Vanguard trimmed the lead down to 4-2 answering
with two runs in the bottom of the inning on a fielding error by
Toro shortstop Fernando Hernandez with runners on second and
third.
But the CSUDH offense answered with single runs
in both the eight and ninth innings, highlighted by a pinch hit
solo homerun from Daniel Pilimai in the eighth.
Toro starter Gustavo Hernandez (1-0) earned the
win pitching the first 6.0 scoreless innings allowing only four
hits. James Dodson, Brett Ingstad, Ryan Smith and Chris Abbott
combined to toss the final three innings allowing a run on only
one hit.
Salazar finished the game going 3-for-5 at the
plate with an RBI. Five other Toro players collected two hits
apiece.
Cal State Dominguez Hills is back in action
tomorrow to take on this same Vanguard team at Toro Field. First
pitch is scheduled for noon. |
