DAVIS, Calif. -- Thomas Juillerat scored 18
points to lead four Aggies in double figures as UC Davis raced to
a 21-point first-half lead then held on late for the 85-79 victory
over Cal State Dominguez Hills in a California Collegiate Athletic
Association men's game in front of 1,827 Saturday evening at
Recreation Hall.
With the win the Aggies improve to 13-6 on the
season, 10-4 in CCAA play. UC Davis has won nine of its last 10
and moves into a tie for second in the conference. CSUDH falls to
6-13 overall, 4-10 in conference action.
UC Davis led 7-5 through the first four minutes
then scored the next 19 points to take a 26-5 lead midway through
the half. Back-to-back three-pointers from Ryan Moore and Fowzi
Abdelsamad got things going and two Moore free throws capped it as
Moore scored seven points in the stretch.
Eric Crookshank kept the Toros close as he
posted a near-double-double in the first half, scoring nine points
and grabbing 10 boards. CSUDH never got closer than 12 the rest of
the half as Thomas Juillerat scored 11 first-half points to keep
the Aggie lead in double digits.
Dominguez made a run in the second half behind
its three-point shooting. The Toros hit their first eight threes
in the half to keep within striking distance. The lead was down to
eight at 57-49 midway through the period and hovered around the
7-10 point range for the next four minutes.
The Toros cut the lead to five at 72-67
following a three from Charles Logan and two Antoine Griffin free
throws with just under four minutes remaining. After two Moore
free throws, Griffin hit another three to make it 74-70 with 3:25
left. On the next Toro possession Malik Harris' three rimmed in
and out and when Abdelsamad hit two free throws on the other end,
the lead was back to six.
After scorching the nets for most of the half,
the Toros misfired on its next three attempts as UC Davis pushed
the lead back to eight with a minute and a half left.
Dominguez was forced to foul late in the game
and UC Davis made enough of their chances to keep it a
two-possession game the rest of the way. When Saul Lankster's
three missed with :11 seconds left, Juillerat grabbed the rebound
and the Aggies secured their ninth win in the last 10 games.
Juillerat's 18 points were one off his
season-high while Moore finished with 17 points and three assists.
Abdelsamad added 15 points while Robert Ehsan added a
career-high-tying 13 points. The Aggies took advantage of 16 Toro
turnovers that were converted into 21 points at the other end.
Crookshank had a big night for Dominguez Hills,
finishing with 18 points and 15 boards. Griffin led all scorers
with 23 while Geovanny Aispuro added 12 and Harris 13 with seven
boards.
Cal State Dominguez Hills will be in action
again next weekend as they host Cal Poly Pomona Friday night and
Cal State San Bernardino Saturday night.
