LA MIRADA, Calif.--The Toros baseball team
outhit Biola University 12 hits to 11 but still fell to the No.
6-ranked Eagles 11-4 in non-conference baseball action Wednesday
afternoon in La Mirada, CA.
CSUDH opened up with a 1-0 lead in the first
inning after a fielder's choice RBI off the bat of 3B Ruben
Salazar (Lynwood/St. John Bosco HS) scoring RF Zac Cort (El
Cerrito/El Cerrito HS) who reached earlier on a single.
But Biola quickly answered with two runs in the
bottom of the first on three hits to take the lead for good. The
Eagles countered with nine more runs in the fourth and fifth
innings to take a commanding 11-1 lead.
Cal State Dominguez Hills put up a run in the
eighth on an RBI double from 2B Pedro Montero (San Fernando/San
Fernando HS) and two more runs in the ninth on a run-scoring
single from 1B Daniel Pilimai (Sacramento/Rocklin HS) and a
sacrifice fly from Joey Caira (La Palma). But that was all the
runs the Toros would manage on the day.
Toro starter Ramon Mata (0-1) took the loss
after tossing the first 3.2 innings. Mata allowed five runs, all
earned, on five hits while walking four. Reliever Roberto Esparza
(Sylmar/San Fernando HS) was charged with six runs after pitching
an inning while giving up four hits and walking three batters. LHP
Raul Claros and RHP Trevor Renck (Anaheim/Savanna HS) came on to
pitch the final 3.1 scoreless innings.
The team was once again led by Cort going
2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored. Pilimai and SS Chris
Martinez (Torrance/LAHC) also collected two hits apiece.
Today's game was the final tuneup before the
Toros begin the California Collegiate Athletic Association
conference schedule this weekend at Sonoma State. CSUDH begins a
four-game series against the Seawolves on Friday beginning at 2:30
