TURLOCK — Cal State Dominguez Hills came out red hot in the first half and did not cool off much as the visiting Toros defeated Cal State Stanislaus, 83-71, in women’s basketball Friday night.

The Toros shot 59.4 percent in the first half and opened up a 44-31 lead at halftime en route to the win as they improved to 11-11 overall and 7-10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Lindsay Rice and Jackie Packard both had career nights for the Warriors in losing effort as CSU Stanislaus dropped to 7-15 overall and 4-13 in the CCAA.

Rice finished with a game-high 25 points and 14 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. It was also her 16th double-digit scoring game. Rice, a junior forward, also made three 3-pointers and was 8 of 12 from the free throw line.

Packard set career highs with 24 points and 11 rebounds. She was 8 for 17 from the field and made four 3-pointers to pace the Warriors.

Shavaki Jackson was 5 for 10 from the field and finished with 12 points and three rebounds.

Cal State Dominguez Hills guards had a hot shooting night as the two starters — Joi Cooper and Tameka Blue — combined to score 44 points. Blue was 8 for 15 for 21 points while Cooper made 9 of 16 shots and netted 23 points.

The Toros shot 33.3 percent in the second half to finish the night with a 46.2 shooting percentage.

The Warriors did out-rebound the Toros, 43-32, but committed 27 turnovers.

CSUDH led 44-31 at halftime behind 13 first half points from Blue as the team connected on 19 of 32 shot attempts. The Toros led by as many as 15 points halfway through the second half, but the Warriors cut that Toro lead to four points when Nadiya Aziz nailed a three-pointer with 6:04 left to play.

The Toros would hold on and got the lead back to double-digits late in the contest and made some free throws down the stretch to pull out to the win.

Zipporah Chase chipped in 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds to help Dominguez Hills.

The Toros next travel to Bakersfield Saturday night to meet the Roadrunners.
