CARSON, Calif.--Jeff Weld went a perfect
5-for-5, including slamming one of five homeruns in the game for
the Coyotes, to lead Cal State San Bernardino to a convincing 17-5
win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in California Collegiate
Athletic Association action Sunday afternoon at Toro Field.
CSUSB is now 9-7 overall and 5-5 in CCAA play
while the Toros fall to 6-15 and 2-10 in league action.
The Coyotes jumped all over CSUDH starter
Trevor Renck (0-2) sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring
seven runs to chase the freshman hurler. The big blow in the first
came on a 3-run homer to centerfield off the bat of 3B Marco
Ramos.
Cal State San Bernardino pushed across two more
runs in the fourth and four more in the sixth and seventh to take
a commanding 17-3 lead. 1B Aaron Rice launched his fifth homer of
the season, a two-run shot to left field in the fourth, and CF
Chris McAllen hit a three-run blast over the left field wall
giving the visitors a 13-3 advantage.
In the seventh, Weld and LF Michael Reh hit
back-to-back homeruns, Weld's a 3-run bomb and Reh's a solo shot
to take a 17-3 lead.
The Toros would score two in the bottom of the
ninth on a two-run double by 3B Fernando Hernandez
(Southgate/Southgate HS) to account for the final margin.
Renck took the loss lasting only 2/3 of an
inning and giving up seven runs, five earned, on five hits.
Freshman reliever Brett Ingstad (Lakewood/Lakewood HS) tossed 4.1
innings allowing four runs on four hits while striking out four
batters. Ryan Smith (Long Beach/Millikan HS) came on in the sixth
and was roughed up over two innings. Smith gave up six runs on
five hits while walking two. Ernesto Paiz (Redondo Beach/Sacred
Heart Prep) and James Dodson (Long Beach/Lakewood HS) pitched the
final two shutout innings for the Toros.
CF Fred Medina (Santa Ana/Century HS) led CSUDH
in the loss going 3-for-5. SS Chris Martinez (Torrance, CA), RF
Jose Montes (Pacoima/San Fernando HS) and Hernandez all had two
hits apiece.
For CSUSB, Weld finished with five runs batted
in as did Rice who finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
The Toros will take on UC San Diego this week
in a four-game CCAA series beginning on Thursday in La Jolla.
